i think decemberunderground is AFI's magnum opus. sing the sorrow may be the seminal album, and rightfully so/its terrific, but the imagery/aesthetic and vision behind DU, the songwriting, just everything about it, is brilliantly done. also, possibly a top-5 artwork to come out of this scene, imo.
Top five at this very moment without much thought: This Celluloid Dream Anxious Days of the Phoenix Wester The Last Kiss
Just bought tickets for February. Will be my third time seeing them, second headlining. (saw them open for Green Day in 2010)
I always thought most people considered decemberunderground their best until recently when I did more reading and saw a lot of lukewarm responses. I hadn't listened since it came out though, so I've been checking it out since yesterday and it sounds like a great follow up to Sing the Sorrow to me. I haven't dug too deep into the second half yet, but those first four tracks are all killer, and Love Like Winter is basically a perfect pop rock song
i wrote about this on the new album thread but i was pretty stunned when i revisited it to discover it's my new favorite afi record. the songwriting is so upgraded that in the transition between it and sing the sorrow they sound almost like a completely different band (except on "kill caustic" and "affliction" ofc)
Backspin: AFI on Their Discography, Being Proudly Polarizing, and Why ‘Female Fans Have the Best Taste in Music’
Can't wait until next week. It looks like they're opening the shows with Strength Through Wounding now? Awesome crowd here:
Their latest setlists are incredible, so many rarities, even bsides, and they change it up every night. I'm jealous.
decemberunderground is 10 today! i always forget it was a summer release. feels weird but will definitely give it a listen or two.
DU is wonderful I'm glad its getting more love as time goes on. Its not quiiiiite as good as STS for me but not many things are. AFI have always felt like our generations The Cure, both sonically/aesthetically but also in how their careers have kinda panned out. Moving from raw beginnings to a gloomy, goth sound then getting a little more poppy and mainstream but still writing good music. I'm sure Davey would consider that a huge compliment haha
