I'll never understand how someone can be so good at talking about things like death, like those lyrics in "Water Tower", or mental illness right next to songs about cats or haircuts and have all of them be great, profound songs. It's baffling and amazing and I feel grateful to just experience it. That being said, if I had to pick a favorite three-song section of the album at the moment it would be "Get Out of the Car" -> "Shrunk" -> "Kirby".

i really love shrunk too. specially the part where he goes back and forth with his therapist

I said, "I'm being guarded. You're a quarter mil in debt, I get more guidance from my barber
Look, I'm not good at this, I grew up in a noogie fest
You built your walls up high or say goodbye to all your Cookie Puss
Here's one, every time my telephone buzzes I see images of hooded riders setting fire to hundreds."
She said, "When you start getting all expressive and symbolic, it's impossible to actualize an honest diagnostic."
I said, "When you start getting all exact and algebraic, I'm reminded it's a racket, not a rehabilitation, okay?
Agree to disagree as grown-ups from opposing clans
Honoring the push and pull I should have called the Scholomance
Oh well. Preservation is a doozy
"Will you be needing another appointment?"
    "Absolutely"
    I'm shrunk

    unreal.

I think this is my favorite verse on the whole album. I keep coming back to this. Lyrically this album is simply unreal

Finally got to see him live fast fall. Will definitely be checking out this next tour when it comes through Michigan.

I'm really glad I waited to listen to the singles. They flow quite perfectly within the album.

Mine came yesterday. Pretty cool that it came with a signed card. Might have to frame that or something.

    5/10 from Spin Magazine (ouch).

Review: Aesop Rock, 'The Impossible Kid' | SPIN

I feel like if you want to ask Aes to "reel it in" to given listeners a "chance to breathe" with his lyrics, then you shouldn't be reviewing his records. As an Aesop Rock record, stacked up against his other albums, this is solid.

Read two paragraphs, got pissed, gave up.

  12. The last thing I'd want him to do is "reel it in" for us. His density is what makes him interesting and unique, and his "verbiage" is not without substance. Also, he couldn't make a better comparison than "While other nerd rappers with a penchant for verbosity like MC Lars and my boo Watsky"????

Such a good album. Hit me straight away, normally it takes a while for an Aes album to really grip me. His beats have got so much better to. He's come on a long way. As much as I loved the HMM albums, i'm all about solol Aes!

i think this thread will just become the depository for all my favorite lyrics from the album

his wit, social commentary and ability to tell stories so vividly is next to none

this verse from lotta years got me today

The kid that work down at the local Baskin-Robbins
Got a tattoo of a lipstick print attached above his collar
I watched him relocating pistachio to a waffle
Thinking I had lost the plot if not the passion for the novel
He asked me what I wanted, I ordered something daft
He said he liked the tattoo Alex drew me of the bats
    Thanks
I like it too but modestly confess
In present company, my coloring is not the main event
    Look at that neck
The message is immediate, the guy F's chicks
I spent a lot of years making friends with cool artists
So when they drew me tattoos I could truly feel important
Now some 22 year old inside a cube of brick and mortar
Got me questioning my morals and their corny pecking order
I should give a shit less
    Cherry-No
    Whip-Yes

My friends and I have been quoting this in the same way over the past 4-5 days.

Didn't think a new Aesop album would be my AOTY.. Not saying it will be #1 at years end or anything, but I really love this record.

this might end up being my aoty like skelethon was in 2013.

the 2nd half is definitely the strongest. shrunk and water tower are up there with some of the best songs he's written.

    just an unreal album, really.

    "
My in-case-of-emergency is in the daisies chasing birds
Employed by trillionaires with perfect teeth and pores, and people who open doors for the people who open doors
    "

    lol, ok aes

this is quickly becoming my 2nd favorite release behind skelethon and possibly a new aoty.. feel the stretch from Get Out Of The Car through the end is potentially the best stretch of songs he's ever done..

I think this is settling in to my favorite Aes record. I always love his lyricism but this time around I'm connecting with it on a whole different level.

"You should have seen me in the 90s, I could ollie up a curb"
