YES YES YES YES FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE TALKS ABOUT RAZIA'S SHADOW HERE. That's also something I picked up on when I first listened to this record.
I gotta be controversial for a second and say that while I think this sounds amazing, the lyrics on some of the songs turn me off a bit. It's a weird pet peeve of mind but the recurring characters and stuff tends to take me out of music. Probably a reason I can't get into Razia's Shadow either
I’m loving this so far, glad it finally dropped. Honestly there are certain bands/artists where the dense thematic lyrics are too much for me too, but for some reason it hasn’t bothered me here.
The only one that stuck out to me so far was "On a Road Trip", to be fair. The first few tracks didn't bug me
Ive been trying to read what I can on these guys, but I can barely make anything out tbh kind of adds to the appeal I guess
I think for me the rest of the music has been so good that the lyrics haven’t really taken me out of it. their prelude ep especially I think the musicianship & arrangements are most of the appeal to me
The lyrics for the Idyll Opus can be found here: https://www.theidyllopus.com/1-in-medias-res (I don’t know how to make word into a link). The pages with the lyrics are cryptic and weird with strange footnotes, incomprehensible (to me) symbols, numbers, and seemingly random capitalized letters. The whole concept is kinda cool, but maybe a little too much for me. It seems a little over the top and pretentious. The music is good enough that it doesn’t bug me though. I don’t need to know about all of the obscure ins and outs of the story. Also this is a kinda cool review of the album I found: Adjy – The Idyll Opus (I-VI) | TUNED UP
Listening to this now and really digging it. Gives me late The Hotelier vibes mixed with stuff like Forgive Durden or Mae or something.
Maybe I'm stupid but I cannot get every song to open? I can get the lyrics to a few songs but not every one.
Same with me. I had only read the lyrics to the first 3 songs when I posted that and didn’t realize that site is kinda messed up. Many of of the links go to the wrong song.
I wonder if it being half finished is a part of the project (there is a half finished book featured in the album) or as you say it's because part two is approaching? (hopefully not approaching in the way whatever Circle Takes The Squares next part of their project is... Approaching) Though if anything has years of listening in it it is very much this album.
This was an interesting first listen. The band is certainly extremely talented but some of the songs felt like they were too meandering. More than enough of the album caught my ear so I’m excited for more listens to peel back some of these layers
In an era of music where so many are worried about singles, plays, guest appearances, and all that kind of stuff, I feel this is kind of refreshing. It’s thematic and expansive it feels like they followed a vision without compromise. I said before it feels like an art project and it really is. Chowing to release an album about June into July on June 30th, and Cicadas and all that spring summer stuff if just sort neat-o.
Yeah I absolutely love this album and totally appreciate the depth. Call it pretentious but I think it’s very cool to follow through with an artistic vision as thoroughly as this album does.
It does feel pretentious at all like some many of these artistic style projects can come off as. This feels like an earthy, longing, existential process. I love how non commercial this feels. Just people making something because they want to. You don't often see something like this get released on a label. Good on those involved. Listened twice, and I'll be giving it some more listens. I could see going back to this album around late June early July next year too.
