This was decent. Visually stunning. It had an Apocolypse Now meets First Man vibe. I think I would have enjoyed this about 100 times more without the voice over. It made the movie feel like it was constantly trying to explain emotions that Pitt was already conveying and just took me out of the whole thing.

I know a lot of people feel that way about the VOs but I like them, not as a way of explaining his feelings but as something to showcase how truly alone he is. He has literally no one to talk to about these things, so he talks to himself/us.

Yeah, the whole “telling when it was already showing more than enough” thing is one of my sole complaints about the movie, but I really love this explanation.

I can see both sides on the VO argument. They can feel unnecessary at times, but taking them out would have made an already pretty quiet movie that much more silent (dialogue-wise). Maybe it would have been better, who knows, but it was probably a little more avant-garde than Gray was willing to go.

I guess some of the VO was expository but most of it felt like it was in the vein of Malick. I loved it

Lost City of Z is the very rare movie I watched twice, both times in theaters too.

I think I definitely prefer First Man as a look in at an emotionally repressed dude in space

I didn’t really connect with this one, but I loved Lost City of Z and I’m a sucker for a coming of age story, so I am in.
