Feel free to talk about your favorite roles of his. Best known for some of these: Little Fockers Dirty Grandpa The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle Sharktale The War with Grandpa Feel free to list ideas for other threads here
Every Scorsese collaboration is an A+ performance, he took on a Marlon Brando character and was just as good/better than Brando, he’s the better performance in Heat (a film that needs him and Pacino both to do what they’re doing but what De Niro is doing is tougher). He’s got as strong a case for being the GOAT as anyone. Haven’t seen Cop Land or Once Upon a Time in America, very interested in those. Love Jackie Brown but think of Forester and Grier first when I think of that movie. The Irishman shows he’s still got it, too, as good or better than any of the other performances nominated for lead actor awards that year. Also Joker is the worst thing he’s done post-2000.
Post method era, Brando is my go-to GOAT contender. PSH, DDL, De Niro, Pacino, all up there. If Denzel more consistently made better movies he’d have a place in the conversation. Cagney is the proto-method blueprint and came alive in ways actors weren’t doing at the time.
Raging Bull is the obvious answer but Taxi Driver is probably my favorite. Also I feel like his Goodfellas performance is somehow a bit underrated? He’s always been my favorite performance in that movie, how he turns on a dime from being warm and friendly to quietly menacing. Like when he tells Karen to go see about the fur coats. Also he’s so great in The Irishman obviously.
PSH and Bale are my personal favorites but de niro probably has two of the three or four of my favorite performances i’ve seen in heat and deer hunter
In terms of essentials (lesser essential, I guess), I'm missing his early DePalma stuff, Bang the Drum, Once Upon a Time, Cape Fear, NY,NY (?), Wag the Dog, Cop Land, Awakenings
One of the few things my father ever put on the wall was a signed plaque with a still from Casino by DeNiro. He hid it somewhere after he said something bad about Trump, though.
I worked at an amc in high school - Hide and Seek one of the most refunds requested in the 2 years I was there, on my shifts anyway lol many displeased senior citizens
Hasn't been mentioned yet besides my gif because obviously everyone likes his drama/serious work over comedies, but him and Billy Crystal was a great pairing in Analyze This
