Sandler has always had yikes-y content in his movies re: racial stereotyping and stuff in that realm. Like Rob Schneider darkening his skin to play a native Hawaiian in 50 First Dates. And of course he’s often made the LGBTQ community the butt of his “jokes”.
Crazy to think Click was the last really enjoyable comedy for me. Didn't like Murder Mystery as much as most people. I think there was a funny joke with the car or something, but can't recall.
tbf if you made enough money phoning it in to buy all your friends Maseratis I can't blame him for making that choice lol also gonna be the first to mention Wedding Singer which is a perfect romcom
That Chuck and Larry movie with Kevin James was pretty much all punching down and mocking a number of different types of people and races. I like most of his movies but he’s definitely had some awful stuff.
Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison are of course classics. Gilmore holds up more than Billy Madison at this point. That run he had in the late 90s is wild with those two and then Wedding Singer, Waterboy, and Big Daddy. I enjoyed Little Nicky too tbh. Never got into Anger Management or Mr. Deeds, I don't know if I've seen PuncH Drunk Love even though I know it has a good reputation. 50 First Dates was great, Click made me cry lol. Went to see that one with my ex girlfriend and I cried at the climax. I've only seen a handfull of the ones after that. Chuck and larry was okay but obviously relied on a lot of shitty jokes, Grown Ups was okay, Blended was okay.
Happy Gilmore was good, but Wedding Singer is more relevant to me.... Wife and I were going to see Wedding Singer on opening day - 2/13/98. Know the date well. Daughter #1 decided to be born early that day, so we missed opening night of it, but we always joke about how that movie will always be associated to her and her birthday :)
no, it just has an early scene where the middle school version of sandler’s character has a sexual relationship with his teacher and the movie treats it like it’s the most awesome teenage fantasy ever and not something that would damage him for life also: the rest of the film
Happy Gilmore is my favourite. Sandler’s acting is probably the worst part of it, but it’s absolutely perfect for the role. And there are so many iconic lines, gags, scenes, and characters. The Wedding Singer is a classic. Billy Madison hasn’t aged super well, but is still great, and I really enjoy him in Big Daddy. Little Nicky & Waterboy have their moments. Still haven’t seen PDL, Uncut Gems, or Click. Wouldn’t revisit the post-2000 stuff that I have seen.
The Meyerowitz Stories is not on the same level as Punch-Drunk Love and Uncut Gems, but it deserves to be seen as well.
