The reason he says the band split up is copy/pasted below:

I actually pull up the camera footage in front of her and I see exactly what was said. He spit on me. He threw a fit. I was trying to calm him down the whole 9. And to be totally honest with you, that’s what fucking happened.

Later on, you know, he tried to change. I went back downstairs. I said, ‘I’m disappointed in you.’ And he’s like, ‘I didn’t spit on her face. I spit at her feet.’ And I’m like, ‘Why are you spitting in my house in general?’ If you’re going to lie about it, you know? And the honest to God truth is, you’re not going to insult me. I asked him to leave immediately. He left. And at that point, the rest is history."

I knew about the Derrick’s fiance thing, but I had no idea they were cousins.

 

I believe he’s quoted in the book Where Are Your Boys Tonight saying something similar. About how they played some festival and Brand New assholes and it seemed like they thought they were “above” the other bands. But Brian was relatively normal.

The writer of the Alt Press cover story (in like 2004?) is also quoted in the book basically saying the band were all assholes to her, except Brian.* She was assigned to spend an evening hanging out with and interviewing them. And they mostly ignored her. But then Jesse tried to flirt with her later on into the night. In hopes that she would write a more positive story about them. Idk, wouldn’t it have been easier to just not be an asshole from the beginning?

*For the record, I don’t think Brian having basic manners means he’s better than the other members of the band.

This also reminds me of when Brand New were booked to play Bamboozle 2007 and when TBS came on as a late addition BN got so angry that TBS were billed higher that they whined to have their set be at 11am so they could leave as soon as possible.

 

I’m pretty sure TBS had more commercial success back then, so of course they were billed higher.

Wasn’t that also the show when they played Degausser twice? I’m sure the festival organizers loved that.

 

I'd have to double check but I feel like I remember one of the AAR guys (maybe Tyson?) saying something about how shitty Jesse/BN was in Where Are Your Boys Tonight. Could be mistaken though
