Being useful in the only 2 threads on the internet I know of with consistently good info and takes versus being chatty and highfiving dunks is my incredibly annoying preference

also, like, it would be one thing if someone i know personally and cared about wanted to talk about this shit with “nuance” or whatever. i don’t have that kind of time for strangers in a forum. i usually keep my mouth shut these days because i know others have it covered, but yeah, not a whole lot of sympathy for people who want to very publicly talk about how it hurts their feelings to be called out for their shitty opinions. and that’s coming from someone with my fair share of shitty opinions, lol.

 

I think people who defend Brand New on here don't do it in spite of the backlash they get, but because of it. They want to feel absolved of guilt, but they know they can't justify their decision to support Jesse Lacey. So if they get everyone on the thread to dunk on them and call them names, they get to feel like a rational measured victim being bullied by all these radical cancel culture warriors. (hence why the "i'm just asking questions" refrain is so popular)

I know the relationship people have with music is so intense and sacred that it reaches beyond the logical part of the brain. So when an artist you like breaches your trust, there's an understandable impulse to cling to the "denial" stage of grief. But the only way to get to the "acceptance" stage of grief is to sit down and sincerely attempt to "separate the art from the artist," which is to understand that just because you enjoy a piece of art, it doesn't make you a bad person nor does it make the artist a good person. It's just art, and the values you devrive from it are your own.

But the issue is that a concert environment is not a value-neutral showcase of art. The stage is where we celebrate an artist, where idolization is fostered. You can not "separate the art from the artist" in a live music setting, because live music is where we form community and express our values.

That's where we get this cognitive dissonance, where people want to pretend the things HE ADMITTED TO aren't that bad, because they still want carte blanche to idolize him, while still pretending to "separate the art from the artist".
