I’ve seen this sentiment a few times, so I do not mean to single you out, but I think music is deeply personal to everyone, and it is not as easy to replace a band with another adjacent band as people make it out to be.

I am sure many here can relate, but it was a very jarring experience to have a band you’ve listened to for over a decade become something that makes you sick to your stomach. I managed to give them up, but it took a long time to fill that exact void. This isn’t a great comparison, but the experience reminds me of that movie “Yesterday”, where all The Beatles music just ceased to exist. (I am not comparing BN to The Beatles, for clarity).

That is (partly) why I am more sympathetic (empathetic?) towards people trying to find reasons to allow themselves to listen again - I do not think they are (all) bad people. I just think in the end, they will, and should, come to the conclusion it is not worth it.

 

I am not gonna post the tour dates but Marilyn Manson is headlining arenas in the UK this fall after the success of his last UK tour back in February.. disappointing comes to mind

 

If you told me 10 years ago that Brand New and Kanye would both be active in 10 years, I would have been hyped. Jarring, dire stuff.

Just circling back on what happened yesterday in this thread. I’ve been thinking about it a lot—not because I’m upset about strangers on the internet being rude, but because it says something bigger about how this community engages with difficult conversations in online spaces. And I (despite my post count) do care about that.

I understand that these conversations aren’t just about music—they’re about power, safety, justice. They matter. But how we have these conversations matters just as much. When people are immediately attacked, name-called, and harassed just for expressing complicated feelings or asking questions, it shuts the whole thing down. And it’s not just ineffective—it’s counterproductive and you end up yelling in a vacuum.

Several people messaged me privately to say they felt the same way, and that they’re exhausted by how hostile this place has become. That should be a red flag. Mods - your goal in this thread should be to raise awareness and push for accountability, not silencing and bullying people—even people who ARE open to listening—only alienates them.

I’m only responding because I actually give a shit. I may rarely post, but I’ve visited variations of this site for nearly 20 years. I think this community could be better. An awesome place where we dig into the nuance, wrestle with hard truths, and hold people accountable without immediately resorting to dogpiling anyone who doesn’t perfectly mirror your language or viewpoint.

I may be a one off, and maybe it is true that the majority of people who come here to express anything about Brand New are Reddit trolls, but if this is truly about creating a better culture, then the culture here should reflect that too.

 

Dickriding a shitty emo band fronted by an abusive weirdo isn't cool, actually. A better culture wouldn't tolerate their return.
