One of them is currently arguing with my wife that the girl was 19 and lied about her age and Jesse is a victim and I'm just like, cool bro.

The thing is, even if the age thing was true, it’s still shitty behavior. It’s just not “illegal.”

Like requesting nudes from fans so they can get a photo pass for a show is scummy behavior. Just because it was more common “back then,” doesn’t mean it’s excusable.

Like is that a community y’all would want to be a part of?

They employ the same tactics of every other “I feel marginalized so I must be marginalized” group. I don’t give a fuck if it wasn’t illegal. It’s still a fucking broken power dynamic.

What Bill Clinton did technically wasn’t illegal. But it was a broken power dynamic. Yes, it was more than that, but same thing applies to Jesse.

Everyone acts as if actual legal outcomes are all that matters. Court of public opinion is a real thing. And if he hadn’t scurried away like a fucking coward and actually VISIBLY put in the work, I would be at one of these shows. But he didn’t because he’s a weak, pathetic man.

I literally saw someone say Jesse fell on the sword and took the blame for all the scene. Give me a break. All he did was publicly apologize to his wife and then he ran away.

I could be wrong, but I really doubt he “did the work” just from how they’ve handled this reunion. Turning off comments is somehow even more cowardly than I already thought they were.

    hate my favorite band

It also wasn't even the first time he had to apologize to her for cheating. So they're also defending a great husband too.

perhaps im being naive but id imagine a fair amount of people excited about the reunion would acknowledge, publicly or privately, that jesse probably did what he is accused of, and that their nostalgia is more important to them than any morality surrounding that. which might actually be more gross than pretending nothing ever happened so maybe I'm being cynical instead of naive lol.

John // OC now, OH forever.

There isn’t a song in their catalog worth the nostalgia hit to justify giving money to a guy who was soliciting fans for nudes in exchange for whatever weird parasocial relationship he offered them.

i obviously agree with that, kind of besides the point though. the quality of the band does not matter.

Truly, the worst. Jesse will do the work - of going away for awhile and coming back to make a ton of money and never be held accountable.

I believe in restorative justice, and I think people can put in the work and redeem themselves, truly.

But in this case there’s nothing to show for it and frankly, that’s really disappointing to see. You’d think after eight years of dormancy you’d think something was happening behind the scenes to really change things, but we will probably never know that.

Anyway, as a gal in the scene who has been so disheartened by so many artists, this whole situation is so disappointing. And I am so mad that they’re trying to make a comeback (are they even playing as the original lineup?) and I am so mad other artists like oh idk…tiny moving parts and Ryan Adams continue to tour or stage some sort of a comeback and act like they didn’t have massive allegations against them that alienated parts of their fan bases.

  18. I also believe in restorative justice, but I don't know that I necessarily believe in it when it comes to victims that were children. Staying dormant is quite literally the bare minimum they could have done.

It would be very funny if this actually Streisand Effects what they’re trying to avoid.

I work in pr/comms. And honestly, just monitoring and hiding negative comments probably wouldn’t have caused much backlash. But deliberately turning off all comments sends a pretty clear message.

If actual celebs (including those with similar allegations) can keep their comments open, so can they.

This mysterious bs may still work on some fans, but it’s very easy to see through now.

Oh, facts. I'm majoring in the same degree/HR (3 classes until I graduate!) and there's been a number of classes where I felt like I could relate to what's going on right now with the band.

I feel like the crowds at these shows are going to be completely foul. scene shows already have garbage pits at the best of time can't even imagine what garbage a mosh of pedophile apologists would be like

It’s honestly a little bit nice that a band who thrived off word of mouth publicity needs to silence comments just to get by

This is my tinfoil hat moment, but I actually think they’re making this play specifically right now with all the other shit going on in the country. Easy to overlook [in theory] with all the terrible things happening.
