It's a common tactic. I've seen it happen with Melanie Martinez as well. Whatever the act, a certain subsection of the fanbase wants to take control of the narrative and will do anything to fulfill that wish even if it means distorting the facts, manipulating newer, clueless fans etc.

 

I guess? I just say P D F, but I was thinking the intended pronunciation here was like "pidif" for the sake of the joke. Maybe I'm overthinking it.

I would say that Brand New is still cancelled, because they are not in the good graces of the tastemaker publications. Pitchfork isn't even posting about their reunion to criticize it, they're just pretending it doesn't exist.


I say this because Brand New was always a band that was defined by their indie cred and not by commercial sales, so them selling out big venues doesn't uncancel them, because there's still a lingering "you shouldn't talk about them" feeling in indie spaces. They haven't retrieved their cool stature yet. Websites are treating them more like Nickelback than Radiohead. Being a Brand New fan used to be seen as on the level of Modest Mouse/Built to Spill/Dismemberment Plan fans, and now they might as well be Imagine Dragons fans to the indie rock world.


Now, I would say that Morgan Wallen and Chris Brown are not cancelled, because they're commercial artists whose image has always revolved around sales. Their success is defined purely by numbers and units.


Maybe the comparison to Louis CK's oeuvre is what will happen. Louis has been such a toxic asset that it's easy to forget how beloved Louie the show was in its heyday. Metacritic scores of 94, 93 and 91 for its final three seasons – it was very much seen as prestige TV, much like how Brand New was seen as prestige indie rock. And people absolutely loved the masturbation jokes, even if nowadays it's the stuff that aged the worst because of Louis' behavior. He still an out arenas everywhere, but he isn't treated like prestige media anymore.

 

I don't really know anything about Maynard or Tool, but I believe the allegations were from anonymous Twitter accounts, which is not a reason to totally dismiss them, but I think that's sort of why they fizzled out. The same user made allegations against Trent Reznor as well iirc.

it doesn't matter whether Pitchfork posts about Brand New or not. their fanbase is as dedicated as ever.

 

i do remember hearing about the Reznor accusations, although i think they were maybe made by two separate accounts that both linked back to the same person? i remember the reporter who interviewed Maynard's accuser tried reaching out to the other account but didn't get a response. that's the extent of what i know about that situation.

As I’ve said to a lot of my friends who are just as flabbergasted as we are that people are willing to support them in the year of our lord, 2025, nostalgia hits hard for a lot of folks.
And for folks who are probably between the ages of idk…late 20s-early 50s (give or take) the band had such a hold on us back in the day.

Nobody wants to listen to people when they lay out clearly logical things, provide evidence, etc. this is how we ended up where we are politically this year, but at the same time cancel culture especially doesn’t exist if you’re a white male making mediocre music.

(and I say this as a 34yo who BN had a chokehold on back in the day, but have simply moved on to better artists who don’t have such scandals around them)

I thought Lacey had apologized to the victims, which made me feel insane about the evidence packet nonsense because why would you put together that thing if he admitted to wrongdoing?

Turns out he only apologized for cheating and admitted to having a sex addiction. Cool man.

 

I think all of what you said here is true. And by the same measure, this thread is very much an echo chamber unto itself. And I agree with the vast majority of this thread and think it’s commendable to have thoughtful discourse around allegations in the music industry AND with the way folks feel about Brand New. That said, proper discourse is not what’s happening or is really even tolerated here. When it comes to Brand New, specifically, there is zero tolerance for nuanced discussion. So it does beg the question of what is the point of this threads existence? If it’s simply to post news of allegations then fair play. If it’s to have meaningful discussion and work through subjective feelings around sensitive topics with grace then I do not see this thread functionally operating in that way at all.

I’m a long time fan of Brand New and have a lot of conflicting feelings and thoughts around all of this, but upon reading this thread, this is clearly not a safe place to actually talk about those things without being attacked or judged.

I say none of this with malice or judgment, but if we can’t actually talk about these things, what is the point exactly?
