I know it's beyond likely at this point but "sources close to the band say" or "I know people in their circle" still sounds like "my uncle works at Nintendo" to me

 

does anyone honestly believe they’re just going to play three random shows and go back in the disney vault?

The allegations unfortunately didn’t “ruin” their career, but it’ll take a hit for sure. Their last album debuted at #1 and they just came off an arena tour. I just can’t picture them regain that momentum at all post allegations.

But then again Chris Brown is touring stadiums now, so who fucking knows how much audiences will let us down

 

I saw on my reddit feed a post from like /r/emo or something that was a picture of the soundboard from their show that had a graphic that said "BRAND NEW 2025 WORLD TOUR"

 

The "World Tour" was in quotations with only the three dates listed so the general consensus was that whilst more dates will be coming, it was a joke from the sounddesk to have it like that. This is in line with the BN 'humour'.

I don't usually have intelligent stuff to say in this thread has anyone else noticed that people who stick by shitbags like Jesse Lacey tend to double down on their support in the same way MAGA heads do

 

idk usually I'm pretty separate the art from the artist but I feel like spending the $80 for a brand new ticket just screams "I am a republican and pedo supporter" but yeah sure I get it the music meant a lot to you when you were 17 you fucking goober

 

People have way more parasocial relationships than they're willing to admit and doubling down is easier on their egos than admitting they're on the wrong side of something.

If Brand New is a key component of the personality they spent their formative years curating, then an attack on Brand New is an attack on them too.

Some people are very weird and very fragile.

 

I just can't stop thinking about the victim who wrote about having a panic attack anytime she hears someone play them out at a bar or in public, and think about what kind of mindset you would have to have to think reliving your nostalgia is more important than her trauma and experience. Now she has to hear about them coming back and all of the support they have. Just awful stuff.

 

That's the telling thing I guess. There's not really an intelligent and reasoned justification when you raise it with a bunch of the still-fans. They rarely say "I separate the art from the artist" - instead, it's just denial.

 

I am going to offer an answer to what is happening, not because I agree with it, but because I think this is a major factor.

Brand New is effectively canceled in 2017. If you bring them up, you get shouted down. Music forums lock threads, publications remove them from lists, etc. The only available place to discuss Brand New at all with other fans is the Brand New subreddit.

It’s late 2023, I have not listened to Brand New in essentially six years. I see rumors online of a Brand New secret reunion, this time more credible than other rumors, and I venture to the subreddit to see what’s going on. Total rejoicing. The people posting about Jesse’s allegations get downvoted, but more interesting to me is that they are being told that the accusers’ stories were not as they seemed and were citing pieces of information I had never seen published, with TOTAL CERTAINTY. Come to find out, there exists an “evidence packet” that has been compiled after “years of research”, that casts doubt on everything that had been said in 2017.

I remember seeing this at the time, and literally saying out loud “Is this how MAGA works?”

So when you only have one place to discuss the band you loved, and that place is telling you “don’t worry, everything is actually fine”, you create an echo chamber that is feverishly praying for a reunion to actually happen.

 

When Minus The Bear and Brand New announced their reunions in the same week, someone was celebrating in the MTB subreddit and I just said I was grateful that at least one of them doesn’t have groomers in them. They tried to get me to look at “the file” and I told them they were psychotic. Absolute insanity.
