For real though. Reel Big Fish have only an appropriate amount of poorly-aged sophomoric lyrics from the 90s/2000s and one incident where Aaron Barrett played a show while on heroin 20 years ago (and he apologized) in their closet and they have horns and Aaron B has better sideburns. And their vinyl is cheaper on the second hand market. If you are even remotely on the fence, switch from BN to RBF now. That’s the last time I’ll say this for now.

You made me curious so I went on Youtube to find that video. The way these people were screaming "OH MY GOD OH MY GOD" as if some otherworldly event was taking place was just, uncomfortable to watch. I've been an obsessive music fan my whole life and I can't think of a single artist who could get that kind of reaction out of me. Let alone it being an artist with a history of grooming and eliciting child pornography. Parasociality is a sad thing.

It's not about me. I'm just intrigued by the whole PR and image management of it all, as it has ties to my professional line of work. They've done the calculus and decided that this is the plan they want to roll with. Like I said, if they just shut up and play the hits, they will make the fans happy. The final frontier will be getting back in the good graces of the indie rock publications that showered them in critical acclaim and deemed them a cool band that cool people listen to, but I do not know if even 'taking the most accountability' would do much to help them there.

it's pretty obvious that they don't care about winning over those who were disgusted by their actions. they're going to pander to those who will give them a paycheck, and have ignored/will continue to ignore those who want them to do the right thing. for them, taking accountability/admitting wrongdoing and having a career are two scenarios that are at odds with one another.

    hate my favorite band

Also donating to a charity doesn't magically stop them from being disgusting. So what does it really accomplish for anybody but selfish people that just want to tell themselves it's okay to go to a show now?

"We're donating proceeds from every show to a charity to protect girls from adult men. We're doing this for no particular reason at all. *wink wink*". That's how dumb it sounds to me.

There’s not a single artist within r&b or hip hop that has ever come out against CB due to his past actions, and it’s not going to start now.

His fans don’t care, and his collaborators also don’t care. It’s such a bizarre situation.

I had it explained to me once that DV is prevalent amongst women of color and they subconsciously will try to justify it, thus him never losing his fans. I can’t speak on that experience so not sure how much water it holds.

    your scene is weak

went for an interview last week and this guy who i've never met before was just throwing the r-word around in casual conversation.

At the end of the day, people are selfish and will push their morals aside if they can benefit. Whether it be motivated by money for artists who still work with Chris brown, or if it’s for the nostalgia hit of going to see Brand New.

I’m definitely not as plugged in to the scene these days but I’ve largely forgotten it’s happening until TikTok showed me videos tonight. So yeah, it’s not garnering much news.

I watched the first song from the BN show and surprisingly didn't really feel anything. I haven't listened to them since the allegations came out, and I think I can feel good about properly keeping them in my past.

BN are really not a big deal outside of emo circles - as a lingering influence, sure, but I've never heard a BN needledrop on TV or heard them mentioned by a non-nerd.

Meanwhile a couple of the vinyl record groups I’m in are talking about dropping $1000 to fly across the country for these shows.

One of the few justices of 2024 was that album absolutely flopping.

Brand New editing “girls” to “you all” in Spin Light shows that there IS some self awareness there, but not enough to know they shouldn’t be doing this.

According to sources, there's a new album finished and a world tour so I don't think these three shows are the last we've heard of them this year.

    this is all there is

based on the number of folks on that stage, the lighting rig/background/production value/everything else, these def don't seem like one-off shows.

I thought it was interesting that my Reddit feed was serving me multiple posts from Brand New fans saying other Brand New fans were misbehaving and exhibiting anti-social behavior at the Brand New show.

it definitely is not the last we hear of them. Know a bunch of folks associated with their circle — there should be more dates dropping in the next week or two

Oh yeah. As said, it only affected R. Kelly and Harvey and I wanna say Diddy, but when he’s gonna have the backing of Kanye, that can’t even be said.

Chris Brown stadium tour, Louis CK arena tour, Brand New reunion tour. We fail to protect any victims of abuse or assault.
