Why pay for a remix album when you can have your fans do it for free?

 

Wait hold on a minute...open to individuals 13 or older??? With how the lyrics are on that album??? Not that I think a person under the age of like, 25 would do this but jesus

 

Every contest where a commercial entity solicits work from fans for clout/exposure/fun gives me supreme ick, whether it’s t-shirt/merch designs, podcast jingles, or content. If fans want to submit, I don’t give them grief but the people who ask and exploit the fan relationship to get free work, no matter how fun and irreverent and cute and cool the tone of the ask is, give me gross vibes.

This happens all the time and gets a pass in the comedy podcast world. It is in the same category for me as comedy podcasts doing ad reads for unethical services and using the “hey it’s me your friend, I use this product that doesn’t work/has issues and I love it” personalized sell.

 

The “Ownership and Distribution of Rights” section especially irked me. Like… this will be pressed and put on streaming and they don’t have to pay for any royalties on top of never having to pay for it in the first place?? Plus it looks like they can change your name so you won’t even get credit if they don’t want to?

 

I remember Enter Shikari did that once when they released "No Sleep Tonight"). I vaguely remember other bands doing remix contests (Starset did some) but I don't recall bands doing whole albums from fan remixes.
