theorizing about what benefits could come from them playing shows is stupid and a waste of typing. there is no reason to give them the benefit of the doubt of giving a shit. they don’t. spend your time elsewhere.

 

haha i was joking. i don't think it's fair to tell people to spend their time elsewhere either though.

this band was a big part of people's lives. it's going to be a topic of discussion.

 

Can we just get a Brand New Accountability thread? At this point I'm tired of seeing this thread get slammed with posts, especially if this goes on for longer and other important accountability issues get drowned out because people keep bringing up the same talking points over and over

 

I'm not sure which is worse, the "victims were lying" crowd or the "He was guilty but I still don't care" crowd. I think the latter is the more predominant opinion these days.

 

I also vote for just let them have the thread they want so badly. I'm just going to stay the fuck out of it.

 

i think the brand new thread should be back and i should have sole moderation of it. any discussion outside solely music will result in them being gulagged.

 

I legitimately don't even want to bother checking this thread with how much cyclical BN/JL content there's been in here lately. Please just go talk about them somewhere else. The internet is a big place

 

No one is making anyone look at any thread. I’d ideally prefer no discussion of them at all but this is preferable to a dedicated band thread where what happened is completely ignored.

It’s ok if your mind is made up either way and it’s ok if you don’t want to see the cyclical discussion, but it’s gonna happen

idk if it's even possible or if it would be extra work for Jason but could there be some kind of disclaimer outlining the allegations pinned atop every page of a potential BN thread? sort of like the little mod notes that pop up every once in a while?

 

We've had this convo a bunch of times. Which bands warrant the disclaimer? The lines become murky.

I really don't want to spend much, if any, time talking about this band publicly. As we saw what happened on Reddit before; I'd love to just not be in any dialog around this band with the way a subset of their fans treat people. I don't find it worth it and prefer a life out of any spotlight at all.

As for could I code that, yes, but I don't really find joy in writing specific code for that band on the website and I don't really think anyone talking about the band is not aware of the situation. I think people know. Awareness isn't the issue imo.

As for a dedicated thread, the community as a whole has seemed split. Some thinking it should exist, others thinking it should only be in this thread. If the thread became anything like the last news post, my preference would be no thread if people are going to just be assholes about it over and over again. I built the Ignore Threads feature with the idea that people could ignore/block threads they don't want to see, but if there's any thread of people being gloating shitheads, I would find that gross and wouldn't want a Pro Elon/Trump or whatever thread here either. There's a version, in my head that never materialized, where a discussion about this band and the relationship people had with the music could be talked about. My own journey with it, for example, has often felt unresolved because I like to/need to talk/write about things to think through things. But the last few examples of this in public spaces on the forum, IMO, have been exactly why I don't think it's possible or good at this time. That last news post was exactly what I don't want to spend my time doing, moderating, or being a part of and very much the kind of thing that put me in a very bad mental space toward the end of AbsolutePunk.net

 

its jason's choice. and its such a niche issue given brand new's incluence on this lil niche, but maybe not so lil music scene. personally, i think if you want to discuss music, tour dates, etc. thats fine. anything that belittles what Jesse has done or moralizing your choice to consume music created by a man who has sexually assaulted and groomed underaged girls or voicing how you just don't care should get you belly-2-belly suplexed through a glass window. if you are in this little niche community then you should already know that you are listening and enjoying the music of a man who has done these terrible things. you don't have to say, "hmmm i acknowledge Jesse did..." before every post, but you don't gotta share how youre squaring the ethical circle either.
