AP.Net was a prime example of it. When the band Shone was doing their mysterious scavenger hunt for one of their song ls and we all thought it was a new Brand New song, people were moving Heaven and Earth to figure it out. They definitely thrived on giving people crumbs and having all those little things get celebrated.

Especially knowing where they came from. Almost every band out of Long Island was problematic in some way.

I was fanatical about Brand New until all was revealed in 2017. And guess what, that was nearly 8 years ago. I moved on, found new musical obsessions and grew up a bit. Did it hurt that a band that I once considered my favorite band of all time could be fronted by a monster? Sure. But like, there are other artists out there, more worth my time to listen to and follow.

Have these psycho fans not found something else to listen to for the last 8 years at all? Pretty pathetic if this is all they had this whole time. There's always something else to discover

Yep. TDAG will always have a special place for me for the time I discovered it. No doubt about it. But there's been a ton of bands that scratch that BN itch that don't have members that are groomers. It is so weird to be stuck on one band.

my hot take is that the closest i ever heard any band pull off BN's mysterious and eerie energy on an album was Citizen on their second album, Everybody Is Going to Heaven. scratches a lot of the same itches that BN's later material did.

When you get a hankering for Brand New, put on Guided by Voice’s Game of Pricks on repeat until you are fully cured.

that isn't a good image lol. that is simply them liking good music. which doesn't absolve them of anything. the quality of their influences and their music and whether or not they toured warped tour is immaterial in this discussion. come on.

Fortunately, I haven't felt compelled to pretend I like BN's boring-ass music since the allegations about JL dropped.

The point I'm trying to make is that Brand New's musical maturity made their fans think that they were sort of immune to having a groomer in the band. It matters because they built a brand for themselves as a sort of "thinking man's band" and that's why their fans react so intensely to criticism of Lacey's behavior, because they were the one band that was supposed to be above that sort of creepy shit.

The same dichotomy exists between Deftones and the nu-metal scene.

I wasn't gonna comment on the take but like, the typical pseudo-smart guy that appeals to other guys in mustaches and is so broody and different is often the MOST stereotypically creepy

Believing that makes you less likely to be creepy is insane. Like Pat says, it has no bearing on the situation, but you CERTAINLY shouldn't be perplexed by the revelation based on that information

And that's definitely true too. But IMO it's the main reason why they have the most ardent defenders out of any problematic artist on this site and in general on social media.

idk why deftones was brought into this that is weird

I'm not accusing Deftones of being problematic. I do see parallels between both bands' images as "the one smart band" in a critically maligned scene/genre, and fans of 'that one band' feel very intensely about how liking them means they get music differently. To me, that's how Brand New built their fanbase to be so devotional, even after everything.

i don’t think the majority of people think of bands that way at all but maybe i’m being naive

i think the fanbase of both bands are devotional bc they really really like the music, not because the image of the band lol

Anyone who is at all concerned about other people thinking the bands they listen to are intellectual is a tool.

I listen to Radiohead and Puddle Of Mudd, I'll listen to them back to back, I don't give a shit.

Is there truth to members of fall out boy and good charlotte also Taylor swift dating minors? I've seen others bring them up when discussing Brand new, on the music side tiktok has brought me videos of JL show and he doesn't sound very good, jesus christ and degausser sounded so meh and they were two of my favorite songs by them, actually Dustin kensrue did a way better acoustic version of jesus christ

A decent % of the bands regularly discussed on here have some kind of shady past that's known about, heaven knows what the real % is.

I may be referring to someone different than that person. But to your point, not going to really discuss it much more.

id say a decent % of the male population have a shady past as males in their early 20s are generally dumb and then you give them access to money fame and power look out!
