What was this? Is it related to the Don Broco stuff above?

I feel kind of uneasy about this. The obvious retraction of statement =/= no abuse issue aside, it feels like they're trying to build themselves up as the good guys again knowing full well that the nature of their initial denial would've stoked the fire here.

i also don't trust retractions all the time, as we've seen, women sometimes pull back allegations because of abuse from fans, it's just totally gross.

Yeah that's what I was trying to get at with my first point, sorry if I didn't make that clear. I get it makes it even more difficult to distinguish the genuinely innocent from the guilty people that can coerce a retraction through their position of power and audience, but we just can't assume in the same way a confession to a crime isn't admissible when there's duress involved.
All I do know is, if Rob did do this and he is trying to make out the retraction gives him a free pass now, he's an even bigger piece of shit.

  8. See this is where I draw the line. Honest question, open to criticism: The statement was retracted, shouldn't that be the end of the story? Am I wrong for thinking so?

Would like to point out Don Broco actually asked fans to stop giving the girl shit, which is better than 99% of bands this has happened to. If nothing else, I'm glad they did that.

Why people retract their statement matters.

  11. Also, last year (I’m in High School) for my final project, we were assigned an action research project. Basically, we had to pick a topic and research it. I chose why rape is underreported, it’s absolutely heartbreaking to read accounts from women who decided not to report.

    hmmm

You're certainly not wrong for thinking so. It still stands true that it does not necessarily mean that it is the end of it - as has been pointed out, a retraction isn't always proof that the allegation was false. However, it should be generally believed in relation to the accused party that that is the end of it. That means, for all intents and purposes, assuming that the Don Broco guy didn't do what he was accused of in the allegation. To act otherwise would be to take an extreme and unhelpful "guilty until proven innocent" stance, which helps absolutely no one.

However, it also means that you shouldn't assume that the girl who made the allegation was lying. It takes bravery to come forward in these cases and the initial step is just that - one step. Plenty have taken that step and then turned back under the pressure/abuse. If a retraction occurs and there's no evidence otherwise, you assume the innocence of the accused party, whilst not automatically believing that the initial allegation was false. It's a tricky line to tread and it sounds like a contradiction but it's the only practical approach. It's why people who ask "where's the evidence?" when accusations are made need to be picked up on such a question. The "Believe Women" movement isn't the "assume guilt" that many mistakenly believe it to be. It's just the only practical approach to promoting an environment that supports victims. It works the other way round too - absence or retraction of allegation is not proof of innocence. If a statement is retracted, you assume the accused is innocent whilst withholding the belief that the initial accuser was lying. Different approach to different parties. Especially, when you're just reading these things online.

  13. I think the most appropriate approach is to take a middle ground when allegations come to light. Neither “innocent until proven guilty” or “guilty until proven innocent” work.

I’ve been in weird places when I’ve gotten new information post allegation from people involved in the situations. I’ve gotten to the place where I’ll ususlly just not say anything rather than defend the accused even if the info makes sense. I always like to make my decisions with the most info I have but it’s still hard to go against what the victim’s account is

Emo Nite in Portland played a few Brand New songs last night. The majority of the crowd immediately stopped dancing and singing along. There were a few boos/yells. They posted today that they will no longer be playing BN in Portland/Seattle, that our voices were heard loud and clear last night.

  18. I'd like to believe they'll stop everywhere, but... I know better. LA Emo Nite is a cesspool.

I was too, especially in my own city. I have to say, I was pretty proud that the vast majority basically just became quiet. Especially after a girl in line said “it happened so long ago” in defending Jesse.

Emo night Brooklyn happened a couple weeks ago here and they refused to play any BN. Was very glad

I haven't been to my local pop-punk/emo nightclub since it happened (strange as I used to go every saturday), but I will say that I remember once the DJ played Lostprophets and of the several hundred people there, like maybe 20 were enjoying it.

Dunno what I'd do if they played Brand New tbf.

I would've assumed that most people going to emo night here don't know/care about the jesse lacey stuff. pretty sure they've played escape the fate/falling in reverse, so i don't know that they'll stop playing BN, but I suppose Jesse Lacey got worse consequences than ronnie radke.

There was some super sketchy stuff that happened last emo night I went to where the bouncer tried to take advantage of a really really drunk girl. apparently cops got involved and an ambulance was called, but it put a big damper on a decently fun night when I woke up the next day and saw that.
