I think it’s perfectly fine to take on a persona or whatever for the sake of art, but when the bit is just harmful language not sure what he’s trying to achieve. It’s a failed experiment that just makes him look stupid and it takes away from the music.

I consider myself a pretty big fan of the band and they do enough collectively that I do think they generally mean well, even as recently as inviting LGBTQIA groups to set up booths at their shows and acknowledging the first show of their tour was on native land. But when you’re being a prat for the sake of a bit it sends mixed messages to those you’re saying you support. I get why people are upset with him and hope he stops it. Idk, this whole album cycle has just soured me.

How come no one ever says they were playing a character when they do something positive or good? Like “I don’t actually support donating to the Children’s Hospital. I did that because I was playing a character of a benevolent person.”

Be careful who you pretend to be

 

Being an ally for LGBTQ+ people in one breath and then using the R slur in another (there are people on the spectrum who are also part of the LGBTQ+ community that are hurt by this!) is horrible but then claiming you are just playing a character is...not a great defense at all.
