Sid Vicious is also a widely-recognized punk rock icon who is still largely spoken about positively, at least with respect to music.

I don't know anything about this person, but I do think it's plausible this is all just ignorance. I also think, however, that for someone with that large of a platform more work should be done to ensure that ignorance isn't causing issues like this.

At worst I think this is immature edgelord bullshit, more than it is pro-nazi/fascism/racism.

i don't think wearing a sid vicious shirt which she most probably did not pick out herself is the same as being a nazi or really an accountability issue

  3. Sure, and I know nothing about K-pop, but when paired with her wearing a QAnon shirt (if true), that is absolutely suspect at best and pro-facism at worst

Also like, how is a major music artist willfully OR ignorantly sporting anti-Semitic symbols and far-right wing conspiracy group logos publically not an accountability issue?

People don’t wear swastikas or QAnon merch with ignorance anymore because punk t-shirts are a fad? Feel like most Jewish fans and family members of victims of conspiracies for starters would sure appreciate it.

It should be to educate the artist about why these things are problematic and push them to do more to be sure they're not wearing, and given their large platform, publicizing and potentially (inadvertently) glorifying problematic/hateful symbols.

I think attacking and vilifying them for it is not the right approach, but I also think that people with such large platforms need to do more and be especially vigilant about these things. And if they have a team around them that is picking their clothes, etc., they need to take responsibility for instructing that team to do the work and be accountable if their team fails.

I feel like it absolutely has to be edgelord bullshit. The coincidence of 2 things like this happening so close together with this specific member makes me think that. The side saying it's weird choice by wardrobe team sounds delusional when it happens this often with 1 member, and I think with her age she has to be just being edgy.

As someone who is into kpop and familiar with Twice, though, this shouldn't have happened at all and I don't think there's any excuse for Chaeyoung or JYP to play dumb about this. I do think that's the beginning and end of discussion though, she cuts her shit out (hopefully) and we move on if she does.

The fashion industry is heavily influenced and tethered to cultural and social influence. Always has been. Designers and stylists above all do their due diligence to research looks and inspirations. To think her stylist looked at that Q shirt, thought to their self “American flag and tagline? Yeah probably doesn’t matter she can go onstage with this” is a choice to see this as innocent ignorance and I don’t think that’s a plausible argument for anyone in 2023 that has access to the internet and education.

I mean, I'd like to think this thread is also "posting instances of musicians being problematic or shitty" as a "hey, you should probably be aware of this if you are a fan" kind of thing. You could argue that is not in line with the title of this thread, but I think posting something like the K-Pop thing is...a good thing, especially since not everyone sees everything and as has been stated by folks in here in the past sometimes this is the only place they hear about such incidents and there are K-Pop fans on this website.

We really gonna have this conversation again like a random ass thread on a music forum needs to have some ultimate endgame?? Let people post what they want. We don’t need a dissection of every post

  18. I know it’s hard to do for some people on the site but you can ignore certain posts in here if you think it doesn’t fit what this thread is used for.

Swastikas are still used in Korea as Buddhist symbols. It’s just that they are on a different side from the Nazi swastika. Even here in Taiwan, the swastika is seen more as a Buddhist symbol than a Nazi symbol.

The education system doesn’t put a large focus on swastika usage of the Nazi party (perhaps so people won’t begin to associate Buddhist temples with it) and kids are taught more about Hitler than Nazis. It’s usually pretty short, too. Maybe a month during WW2 and then it’s back to mostly Asian history unless they are in a specialized history class. Compare that to them seeing a swastika is nearly every Buddhist temple. They will recognize his mustache before they recognize the swastika which is tilted differently.

If it was a symbol Imperialist Japan then they would know of it, but the Nazi party of Europe? The education system in this part of the world couldn’t care less. It’s something that should be changed, but won’t be due to culturally reasons.

I’m not sure if she is ignorant due to this. She very well may be (I know most of the people I’m familiar with are ignorant of it), but obviously her management should know about the Nazi swastika because it’s their job to advertise her globally. They should know how the swastika is seen outside of East Asia. If not, that’s a pretty terrible management to represent someone globally.

The fact that she wore this days after the Q shirt is two pretty big misfires, however. Not sure if I’m so inclined to believe it’s just a coincidence and hopefully her management makes a statement.

Yeah, it is, but the issue is far deeper than that. Most in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, etc. wouldn’t dare wear it because it’s a symbol associated with temples.

Never stated it wasn’t cringe. Just pointing out that it’s the result of a failed education system and the citizens themselves shouldn’t be held against it.

This is a question a lot of westerners ask themselves once they live in Asia. No one is the first to be frustrated with this and it’s quite a struggle for most to even educate others on it.

You and I are on the same side. I’m just explaining why this shit may happen.

Can't stop thinking about this post and how the trope is "But For Me, It Was Tuesday" but also that it literally is Tuesday, and I don't know what this means or if it even means anything.
