  1. I think silence and staying would be enabling that behavior and they should leave and make it very public why you're leaving regardless of how good a job it is. Organizing boycotts, etc.

More and more reasons things like unions, social programs, and a society where no one is put in the position of having to choose between a job and working with abusive people are important.

Capitalism promotes heirarchies and power structures that create imbalances. Abuses of said power are intrinsic to the human condition. There is neither a CEO or a well-meaning musician that is immune to being corrupted by societal laws that inform how we live.
We can all strive to do better, but realistically it will not change until community is valued over profit. This may seem that it occurs in the scenes we love (and DIY at large) but it will infect every facet of our lives until it is dismantled. Idk, I think a lot of us pride ourselves on being above it and I've come to realize I can't be above something that I am, inescapably, very much in

tl,dr people probably won't stop hurting eachother and being shitty until something changes on a massive scale and I hope I live to see it

This reminds me of the article Jason posted yesterday where Ian MacKaye talks about the ethics he lives by.

Everything she says in this tweet is contradictory to every other statement I've seen about her. What in the world is going on?

EDIT: Also, this does not seem like the kind of person to be responsible for providing ANY type of therapeutic services.

if PT wants any kind of trust back, then sheridan needs to step down from any role. no one is going to trust the organization with her associated with it.

  7. In her post she says she isn't a therapist but someone found this from shortly before this all came out.

  8. if i'm a straight white dude in this scene that feels like he could do better, my first choice of therapist to help me do better is DEFINITELY gonna be a person whose stated goal is to get me fired

It seems like Sheridan’s problem is the inability to separate her ambition for working in the music industry from her position as the executive director of an organization that offers mental health services to that same industry. You can’t have both. I can’t reiterate enough how unethical I find all of this.

  11. That's what I've been trying to figure out how to say. If I was in a mid-sized band in this scene I'd much sooner go to a therapist that had never heard of my band than one who knows (or is a fan of) all my friends and colleagues

I work in healthcare, it breaks my heart thinking of someone reaching out to my organization for help, and trusting in us, and getting someone unqualified in return. I've encountered Licensed Social Workers and the great work they do for patients and families. Really gives me an uneasy feeling thinking of someone claiming to be in a position of care that isn't properly trained.

Feel like what is happening here is that Sheridan is making a deceitful distinction between formal "therapy services" and the kind of informal therapy she was giving Sarah and others including Evan

In the process of getting connected to a licensed therapist you end up engaging in confidential communication with the person connecting you and that communication is functionally therapy whether or not it is formally so

Also this whole situation is wildly fucked up and I want to add that while absolving Evan is not the way to go, the effect of being manipulated into crafting a statement by someone who is holding confidential information over your head shouldn't be overlooked

Chicken from the band Dead to Me has publicly spoken about being addicted to coke and how MusiCares paid for his rehab/ treatment and thus saved his life

Wasn't Musicares the organization that thought bringing Front Porch Step to do a Warped Tour show was a good idea?

  17. Yeah basically.

From the Billboard article a few years ago

"Mcelfresh's prescribed counseling plan was "designed by some of the best therapists in the country that work with us, and MusiCares was aware and helped guide this thing a little bit," Lyman says. "They felt that assimilating him back into music after eight months of therapy would be a good thing."

also, does this girl have no self awareness? she defends taking down pinegrove then goes on to reassure us that she's gonna stay put in her org despite tons of people coming out against her.

Never said that's all I care about. Reddit is blocked at work so I can't see certain things that were posted in the last couple days and I'm out of the loop. Was hoping someone could update me on the Pinegrove situation. Apologies if it came off that way..

  24. I mean -you- and anyone can be excited for whatever they want. But any form of abuse is still abuse and whatever happened behind the scenes doesn’t absolve that

nothing changed about his actions, just the fact that the way it was handled by evan was probably forced by a "therapist" that was out to take him down. doesn't mean he didn't do anything different than we knew happened
