If I was in this situation I’d probably go see Feist then walk out

True, but that hasn’t stopped some bands from pulling the plug.

  3. Maybe, and hear me out on this, people often only do the right thing if there are minimal consequences for them personally

biggest red flag to me that someone's using their alcoholism/addiction as an excuse to deflect accountability lol. ive spoken at length before about having sympathy for people who act in such ways while suffering from the disease of addiction, which medically speaking literally makes people act against their nature to fuel their addiction, that's just a symptom of the disease, but that doesn't mean you're automatically absolved from the hurt you caused while suffering, it just means in my view there's room for redemption if you actually do the right things. someone saying "look, im going to AA!" is clearly more interested in making it look like they're doing the right thing than actually just shutting up and doing it. actions speak louder than words (im not a 12 step guy anyway but i understand it works for a lot of people and have studied the literature more than id have liked to given the sorry state of rehabs in america) so shut the fuck up and go to your meetings and work your steps and when you get to making amends then we can talk. that's a several month long process, it shouldn't be in your first statement following accusations of wrongdoing.

i think ive also figured out what bothers me about so many artist statements and its that almost every single time they're trying to appease their fans/fans of their band instead of, you know, the people they hurt/assaulted/abused. like you should be more concerned about making things right with your victims than convincing your fans you're sorry but you also totally didn't do what the victims are saying. that shows me you dont give a shit about the people you hurt or the hurt you caused and you're trying to save face for your music. and a lot of times after a statement people say like "well, they cant make everyone happy people are going to attack them no matter what they say," and to that i say, who cares, their concern should be with the victims first and foremost. anything else doesn't even matter.

  9. Yeah I agree with all of that 100%. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool 12-step "believer" or whatever and I couldn't care less if he goes to AA or not, has no bearing on whether he deserves a platform/fame/etc going forward.

Also I'M NOT SAYING I'M JUST SAYING, if he was really doing the AA thing the statement would have been "I did this, it was wrong, I take full accountability for my actions." Full stop. None of this defensive image-rehab bullshit.

  10. Also AA members aren't supposed to publicly identify themselves as AA members or mention AA largely for this exact reason: if you're a fuck and you try to use AA as a shield from your fuckery it makes AA look bad just by association.

exactly, and that statement would've come after months and months of step work and going to meetings not the second he got caught

Yeah, it reminds of when Urban Meyer apologized to Buckeye Nation for employing an abuser, rather than, you know, the person that was abused.

I’m no lawyer but I don’t think most people are going to go on record admitting to sexual misconduct in case the victims (rightfully) decide to sue. Thus you end up with these toothless statements that deflect blame.

(we all know he’s guilty af though)

  14. I am a lawyer but that's neither here nor there (don't practice this kind of law anyway). Even if you don't use the exact words I did there's a way to make a statement that isn't deflective bullshit and takes responsibility for what you've done wrong.

Also my point about the AA deal stands regardless. It literally says in AA literature that if you've done something criminal you've gotta be willing to turn yourself in if that's what it takes to make amends. Crazy or not, it's in there. But I digress...

Appreciate the insight! You’re absolutely right, maybe because I’m jaded/cynical and have yet to see someone do one of these statements well that I just assume everything is done to avoid litigation.

Buy a Feist record or Feist merch this weekend if you can
