  1. Not to rehash previous discussions, but how well known (and accepted) are Skiba's ties to shitty people outside of this website? Not looking for an argument, genuinely asking because I don't think I know anyone irl that knows about his flirtation with Nazism

Idk, the Skiba nazi stuff is one of the more “grasping at straws” arguments i’ve seen around this site. Based on everything i’ve ever seen him post online, he’s very LGBTQ friendly, never seen anything racist, and says a lot of the right things in captions on his posts. I feel like his obsession with World War II and reading in general, plus that douche he had on his record a decade ago is what leads people down the “he must be a nazi” path. I don’t know what his current relationship with that dude is, so forgive me for ignorance if he’s still covering for him these days. If i’m missing anything please let me know though, i’m not trying to be dismissive and would love further info if anyone has any.

This was kind of my take on it as well after reading into it. I mean I don't really know but I don't think it's substantive

    He does like cops though

    Skiba did address this somewhat:

"I only have it because Anton LaVey wrote the foreword. And because of the myth/truth behind Ragnar Redbeard being Jack London. I have a bunch of books I don’t agree with. I’m interested in other people’s views, especially when they disgust or confuse me. As long as they’re interesting, I’m interested. It’s sexist and racist and all things unpleasant. That doesn’t make me any one of those things. Just interested."

Skiba’s whole schtick is being dark and edgy. Pair that with an interest in Nordic runes and the Occult, and you’re on shaky ground.

Do I wish he would be more conscious of the imagery he uses and the media he promotes? Yes.

Do I think he’s a Nazi? No, but he needs to do better in terms of the company he keeps. Although, I believe he's cut ties with both Douglas P. and Boyd Rice, the latter of which is an indefensible human.

I will say, however, that his support of military and police is disappointing, though I feel that may be inherited from his parents, who are both veterans.

the military thing is def his parents, as I think he said they are both Vietnam vets. The cop thing is weird though, I think it started heavy after 9/11 with cops and firefighters. He never got the memo that policing is actually racist as shit and cops uphold that institution. Or he did and didn’t care.

Is it problematic to watch serial killer or murder documentaries on Netflix? Asking for a friend. I’m genuinely curious.

imo no, but it can get weird and crossing a line when people act like these aren't real lives and real disappearances or murders. I've been a fan of true crime and stuff like forensic files since childhood so maybe I'm a gatekeeper lol but I feel like true crime podcasts have rly blurred this line in people. Lots of ppl I know who enjoy true crime are respectful, but it's poor taste when someone seems to put entertainment value above the actual people. I know someone who gets actively disappointed when unsolved mysteries are solved because they think the "fun" is in not knowing and the speculation and theories, and they don't seem to care whether the person gets their name back or the family gets closure or whatever, which I think is gross

But sorry cause this also feels derailing in this thread. I just have lots of feelings!

  16. Yeah, once again, I didn't mean to ask why Skiba was shitty, I know his deal, more so whether anyone outside of this site really talks about it. This was in response to being disappointed about the Coheed tour.

I would say most people do. At least in the Chicago punk scene. He grew up north of the city, close to the Wisconsin border and had family members that were in military, law enforcement, and the fire department. That’s where that sentiment stems from. Laura Jane Grace has talked to him before when his social media posts were particularly bad. Everyone here that I have talked to says he means well, but simply should not have posted some of the things he did.

Some people I work with love the true crime genre but take it way too fucking far. One of them had a mousepad made with a picture of Ted Bundy on it and another has John Wayne Gacy as their screen saver.

true crime rubs me the wrong way. like enjoying horror movies i can get because it's not real, it's entertainment. but being entertained by stories of real people being murdered and making celebraties of the murderers. i dunno, man.

99% of true crime podcasts / shows show how much of monsters murderers are and highlight their victims. It’s kind of the unspoken rule of getting into the true crime genre.

  24. I feel like there is inherently a problematic aspect to true crime in the sense that regardless of how tasteful or well-done, the story will always be told as some form of entertainment. That being said, I also think it's natural to be curious and wonder about the morbidity of death and how human beings can be capable of some truly evil things, so as long as you have a level head on your shoulders and understand what you're taking in, it's a perfectly reasonable thing to have an interest in.

There are psychological and social takeaways from a lot of true crime stories. Always nice reminders of how useless every single police officer is. There are definitely people who lean too far to the popcorn spectacle of horrific crimes though.

Is it such a slow day that we are resorting to debating the problematics of true crime in a music accountability thread? Not everything is problematic just because it’s something dark. Stating that true crime glorifies problematic things is an extremely ignorant statement as well.

For these reasons to begin with. A lot of true crime actually shows the monsters the criminals are, and even the sometimes worse monsters in their lives that shaped them. At the same time, they also bring the victims and their names/memories to the foreground, and highlight that these were people.

True crime is an aspect of history. The fascination with true crime is similar to the fascination of history that many people have. Yes, they are presented in entertainment mediums (documentaries, dramatized re-enactments, YouTube, movies, etc.) but so are history pieces based on wars, injustices, rise and falls of historical figures, the good and the bad moments of history and so on. The ultimate meaning behind true crime and history pieces alike is to keep a record of those stories and the people involved; good and bad, known. Boiling a fascination with history, true crime, whatever down to being ‘problematic’ is ignorant and misinformed.
