nobodys cancelling anybody. just know who you support.

Who gives a shit lol, I’m wearing a dgd shirt irl right now (just so happened to be the t shirt I grabbed this morning, never left the apartment as I likely have Covid) none of this is about any of that, it’s just holding dudes accountable when they say shitty things, what happens next doesn’t matter much. don’t care about ruining lives or removing platforms over shit like this, but if people decide not to listen to them that’s perfectly fine because actions have consequences, you know? wouldn’t get mad if someone said fuck this band I’m done with them, it’s a deserved response.

 

believe it or not accountability has very little to do with “cancelling” someone and that the two have become intertwined makes it impossible to actually hold people accountable because they’re able to use the scapegoat of cancel culture anytime they have to face the consequences of their own actions and slide on by without any meaningful self reflection

I had a whole tirade about the word or act of “cancelling” someone in drafts but didn’t know how to phrase how fucking stupid the idea of it all was but Sophos sort of nailed it

 

I’m not going to answer whether Tilian is “canceled” or not because cancel culture isn’t real and at the end of the day his career will be mostly fine. My point in posting is so people can be aware that the person they support has some…not great views on Muslims and black people.

It just sucks that someone came in pretty immediately and was arguing over semantics whether what he said was a slur or said with racist intent instead of realizing that it was unacceptable regardless of intent. It’s okay to realize that musicians you look up to fuck up sometimes or have shitty views. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to immediately stop supporting them, it just means you should maybe give pause and rethink whether their views line up with yours and if you’re willing to continue that support in the future.

 

cancel culture is definitely real, imo, there are absolutely people that just jump at any opportunity to “cancel” any celeb or musician or anyone with a platform or whatever when accusations come up, and people go out of their way to dig up shit from peoples past with the intent of igniting a “canceling,” it’s a real thing that happens and to pretend it’s not is pretty disingenuous, but people get it twisted with other people just looking for accountability and wanting people to own up to their mistakes, because if they did there would be no need to “cancel” anyone and cancel culture actually WOULDNT exist, but since people accused of shit tend to deny it and cry out they’re the victim of a cancel culture mob it’s a never ending cycle that feeds into itself and no one ever grows and learns anything. don’t get it twisted, this “cancel culture” is far from being on the same level as, you know, dudes who do shitty things, but I just think it’s disingenuous to act like it doesn’t exist when people on the left have absolutely had it weaponized against them by bad actors on the right and lost their platforms over it. It’s not a one way street ideologically speaking. that’s all. some may disagree and continue to say it’s not real and that’s fine and I know where that mentality comes from and why that’s the typical response

The cockroach phrase is known as probably the second most memorable al Pacino line in Scarface, they sell shirts with it on it. Not defending that guy and a derogatory term but it has nothing to do with race.

 

If you've somehow read the past two pages and still come to that conclusion, I really don't know what to tell you. The term clearly has been used many times over in connection with race

 

not that it matters remotely, but i can think of like 10 quotes from scarface before i even get to cockroaches. can't believe the post.

 

Also assuming people understand a movie reference and using that as an excuse when saying something (reminds me of the excuse Teen Suicide gave for their band name) is…weird. Not everyone has seen every movie so maybe don’t quote lines from movies some people may not have seen that could be seen as racist.
