sorry, i shouldn't use bare minimum. i only know what he's done based on random posts here on this forum, but the main point is that i don't want k0ta's feelings to be invalid. i don't know, i see where she's (sorry if i misgendered) coming from

He also may have genuinely assumed that by asking consent that the fan wasn’t being put in danger or was at least okay with that risk. He asked for consent, I don’t think that shows disregard for the experience.

Anyway, I don’t want anyone’s feelings to feel invalidated. This isn’t a black and white scenario, and I don’t agree with everything said in here so far, but I don’t view it as problematic for having a different stance.

Ok, well, I can't find anything that says that's how he put it, so you probably shouldn't put it in quotes like that.

    upload_2019-8-15_18-18-1.png

That quote is definitely not here, and I don't see anything objectionable in this excerpt. I think your point is silly, as it basically says that any white person who takes influence from black music is wrong for it because they are able to do it without the consequences of being black. And it also implies that in taking influence from black music, white musicians are "speaking on behalf of others." I don't think many people would like the musical world where no one violates this rule.

Certainly, there are insensitive or harmful ways white musicians can cynically co-opt black music, but you haven't made any argument about his music, you've just said he's speaking for black people by saying he liked the way Percy Sledge sang

The quote I'm referring to is from an audio interview where he speaks about his musical influences and how he felt he understood black conviction in music. Though, my issue is not with him using the term "black conviction". My issue is with him being influenced by black music in a way he thinks he can speak as if he understands. Which might sound like a ridiculous standard but it makes sense to me. Frankly, black people have soul because of the introspection oppression caused us to have from necessity and I don't like white men selling it and going to great lengths to convince themselves and others that they understand.

The messianic complex he has where he thinks he can speak for other groups of marginalized people.Which led to his actions which I've said above now I recognize might have been necessary. As a gay black man his actionsyesterday made me feel suspicious of him. It's to the point now where all that's left is the emotion. The 1975 have been my favorite band for a long time, a source of joy and I hate that Matty's recent actions have made me feel less trusting of his intention and his ability to be an ally.

I don’t think the Matty thing goes here but some of you could remember that queer people aren’t a monolith and we don’t all have to agree on things. Some users don’t like his gesture, some do. Not sure why we needed two pages on the subject that devolved into insulting people who regularly post in the thread.

Not scrolling back through this mess again but whoever said you feel like your personal listening choices don’t gel with the thread- they’re your choices. We’ve gone over it time and again- privately listening to “problematic” artists is your choice because only you decide where your like is. When it turns into public support and defense of abusers/rapists/racists/whatever is where you become subject to criticism. I’m sure you’d be surprised by some of the artists people listen to in private for their own enjoyment or benefit. I certainly have a few “problematic” artists that I keep in my private rotation because I’m an adult capable of making my own decisions BUT who respects that it’s not something to push on others. End of story.

That screenshot is of a post on St Vincent's Facebook feed:

A comment on that Facebook post says the article came from The Atlantic:
Doublethink Is Stronger Than Orwell Imagined What 1984 means today
    GEORGE PACKER JULY 2019 ISSUE
Review of "The Ministry of Truth: The Biography of George Orwell's 1984" BY DORIAN LYNSKEY DOUBLEDAY
    https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2019/07/1984-george-orwell/590638

...and the text matches, as you can see from doing a text search in the article for phrases from the Facebook post. I don't know anything offhand about the article's author, George Packer but per Wikipedia George Packer - Wikipedia he doesn't sound like he's right of center at all.

Wharf Rat wrote that the essay was written by Rod Dreher but Dreher's name isn't mentioned in Packer's article. I only skimmed Packer's article quickly but I still didn't see any connection to Dreher. I googled the search term "Rod Dreher George Packer" without quotes and found this article from a right-wing site: Spotting Doublethink In Ourselves written by Rod Dreher, and he is commenting on parts of Packer's article which weren't included in Annie's Facebook screenshot. I don't see any connection or alliance of thought between Annie's post and Rod Dreher's article at all.

My simplest take on Annie Clark / St Vincent's post is that she saw an interesting article about Orwell and the arts and censorship concerns in a print copy of the article in The Atlantic and she posted a screenshot on her Facebook feed for her fans to read and post deep comments about. I don't know any reason to think Anne has any connection or awareness of Rod Dreher or what he's written on this article. If there's a deeper political meaning in Anne's post here beyond whatever you'd want to read into the screenshot it's not obvious to me what it may be.
