I think the band name 'boygenius' was a play on the first part of what you're saying.

I am having a hard time articulating what I wanna say cause I feel like I come off like an ass each time lol. I think his red flags were very evident and people hand waved them for a long time. I'm glad people are seeing it now but it also makes me sad how men get to continue their harm and destruction because what they didn't wasn't That Bad... until suddenly it is. Ryan is responsible for his own actions, but when women share their stories and the red flags are there, people need to listen and trust them and stop enabling. Mandy has been telling us this for a while now. Phoebe has been telling us this for a while now. Not enough people listened. It's frustrating when the signs are all there and women are shouting this from the rooftops and it takes more girls and women being harmed for things to even kinda sorta maybe shift. I'm just tired.

Working in any industry, music included, when not a cis man is a constant dance of compromising "comfort" which is really just basic human respect and decency. People have said it much better in this thread but we're told that's how the workforce is and that anywhere we go we should be expected to deal with prejudice related degradation. In music, it's even more intense because there's the pressure of only having one "shot" to make it for a lot of people. Not only are you being coerced by the actual abuser but by the workplace itself.

also, I wish as a culture we'd really, really have more of a conversation about unethical age differences even for those over 18. I think of the Phoebe Bridgers lyric with "you were in a band when I was born" and I just hate those who stood by, specifically in Adam's sphere, and let that happen and the larger culture that normalized that because it's such a common experience for girls her and my age. An age difference between a 35 and 45 year old is not the same as one between a 40 year old and 20 year old.

Ugh yes I am such a judgmental bitch when it comes to age differences where one is barely an adult. That lyric has always made me so sad. IDGAF if it's technically legal it's gross and I'll refrain from getting all the way on my soapbox but once we start looking at these sketch men as the sketchos they are, the better off we'll be.

  14. Ok so to start fuck Ryan Adams.

As a guitar player, I have to raise the concern: how will all the brands that endorse them handle this? Take JHS Pedals, for example. He has a signature pedal called the VCR through them, which is very popular. Now, JHS has not been a morally upstanding brand in the past, which is slightly off topic for this thread. Will something as public as this finally convince the music industry to take this shit seriously?

As someone who's about to enter the recording industry, fuck all this abusive, sexist noise. Women in music are killing it right now, and I hope that this story spreads like wildfire.

  15. Also, things like this make something like Kacey Musgraves sweeping the Grammys that much more important. Empowering women in music is part of how we stop this.

Getting into Phoebe Bridgers over the past year, it’s insane how many articles Ryan Adams is credited in her rise (like the NYT article stated) and how she said how “Motion Sickness” is about him, a song about person verbally abusing her and looking down on her. And how she even referred to him as “bad news.” And yet we all kind of said “Oh well. He’s an asshole, ya know?”

It just sucks that that can’t be enough.

Ryan Adams has always come off to me as a caricature of the narcissistic man child "i am an artiste please celebrate my struggles it's part of the art bby" kinda fuckdude who hangs around with women that are way too young for him because deep down he's a sad lil boy with no self esteem and tries to act 20 when he's pushing 50. This just reinforces that.
Answer: absolutely nothing. The VCR (and I think the other peda he has) are some of the most popular units on the market. They might discontinue them, which will definitely make the resale market blow up, but typically guitar players, specifically the FB-group-GAS-bros who are into gear give so few fucks they'd make Kevin Lyman blush.

But like, I'm pretty sure Dean still sells the confederate Razorback, or did way longer than was probably acceptable, so that should tell you what you need to know about the guitar gear world.

I didn’t realize until that article that PAX AM is his company. His reach stretches so much further than I realized, I can’t insgine how many more people must have been hurt at varying levels over the years.

I have a couple questions about the Ryan Adams story which hopefully will add something to the conversation:

    1) Does Ryan Adams have any known political orientation or connection to any sort of cause or charity? I'm asking because it's remarkable he's worked with so many mainstream and alternative artists and not dabbled in some sort of cause if only to promote his career that's lasted some 25 years or so, since he was in high school. He seems almost strangely apolitical. I'm wondering if he tends to be politically conservative and may act some of the worst of that out in his relationships, not that a less conservative political point of view immunizes one from abuse, of course.

    2) I know guys like this can act out who come from any political orientation or genre, but aside from that, is there maybe a connection between his Americana style and him being able to get away with acting so abusively for so long? I'd be inclined to think that artists who are trying to appeal to a more rural, red state, conservative audience might be more likely to get away with (or in turn be victims of) abuse.

The stories that are coming out for him make this sound like something that's nearly impossible for close friends and business associates to not know something about -- I know a lot of abuse happens behind closed door, in secret, in shame, etc, etc, but when you start talking about multiple victims and many years it's hard to imagine him getting away with this and a lot of people close to him not knowing. And act abusively towards people in general if he thinks it's to advantage -- to guys as well, it's hard for me to imagine a guy being truely ethical and reputable with guys and do this to women (at least that's been my experience -- guys that abuse women may be in positions of power but they usually aren't particularly well though of by guys who know them well). This might also help explain why he's targeting especially young women, the older ones and the ones who know him know better.

    2) He's a cis het white male. You can get away with that anywhere in the world.

Martina, I know you don’t ask these question in bad taste but sometimes it really comes off that way. Politics have nothing to do with how men behave- please see how many outspoken liberal men treat women behind closed doors. Furthermore, abuse DOES happen in private and it is entirely possible for someone to be having their life torn apart while the abuser’s friends are none the wiser. I know this from personal experience and I know many women who will tell you the same.
