so like, bands retire songs from their setlists literally all the time. very rarely is it met with more than a "damn that sucks," if anything at all. and its usually because bands just get tired of playing those songs, nothing more nothing less. hayley retires a song from paramore setlists, a normal practice for any band, and has an actual good reasoning behind it and people are....really mad? misery business wasnt even their only decently big single from riot, first of all, so miss me with the "but my nostalgia" because we all know youll go just as hard for crushcrushcrush or thats what you get. second of all, as someone who was obsessed with misery business in 2007, its not even close to a top 25 paramore song overall. maybe not even 30-40 if we're being super honest with ourselves here. so yeah i think that means the outrage behind it is not only unjustifiable but also obviously steeped in misogyny. like im actually really baffled people are as mad as they are

People don't wanna be reminded of feminism and have that "stick to playing music" mentality. If misery business makes or breaks your paramore concert experience in 2018, you probably weren't gonna have a great time to begin with. They're not a nostalgia act and have consistently made well known and exciting music (i wanna say because im struggling with tone right now that this is me agreeing/adding on to what you said!)

yup 100% paramore has gone on to much bigger and better things since riot, they are far from the band that made misery business they are so much more and have been since brand new eyes. theyve gotten way better with every single album and constantly evolve and gain new fans along the way. so many kids who go to paramore shows were like 5 years old when misery business came out. old fans who still cling to old scene mentalities are probably just a vocal minority, but they are awful.

Late but re: fandom discussion. Yeah, gonna go ahead and agree with that shit. Between the kind that seemed happy go lucky but was lowkey pretty creepy and toxic and the kind that pretty much always resembled the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan it's always been true that fandom was a mistake.

I mean, I'm not going to speak for everyone and assume there isn't someone out there who holds MB close to their heart for some reason and for that person not to be able to see that song live sucks.

But it's totally up to the band and that's cool and understandable. I personally wouldn't view Paramore as anti-feminist if they kept playing that song, but if they feel they've outgrown it and want to spread a different message then good on them.

There's been a resurgence of these types of tweets among DIY bigwigs, so I'm wondering what high profile redemption happened that they forgot to tell us about and are now proceeding to vindicate us for not taking into account

Because otherwise it just reads as "I can't believe people don't want my abusive/bigoted friend who's been called out and hasn't apologised to come to shows". It's like those people don't understand that for people to start trusting someone again after a wrongdoing they need to either stop doing the bad thing or at least apologise, or at least show redemption. But instead they get mad that people don't immediately forgive and forget and want to feel safe at shows. It blows my absolute fucking mind that so many people in the scene favved that tweet. Makes me feel real welcome.

I think the idea of the tweet was more to call out the hypocrisy of constantly preaching against such a mindset while enforcing it un-ironically elsewhere, not so much trying to to point out a particular redemption. Your reading of it was something I hadn't even considered when I first saw the tweet though, so thank you for that perspective, because you're right that it can totally come off that way.

Like I don't get what else it can be about, obviously this isn't a rhetoric empty shell, there's actual substance of lived experience within it, so what is it about if not my interpretation? Where is black and white thinking imoosed in DIY if not in the subject of abuse and bigotry?

When I initially read it, I was thinking of the tweeter having good intentions and trying to point out a flaw like ostracizing people who speak out, but I think I clearly misinterpreted and that you're right.

Okay I sorted it out, and they didn't mean badly and it came from a good place, here's the thread, but my issue here is that I saw a bunch of people liking this tweet who are abuse/bigotry apologists so,,,,,,, maybe we should be careful when vaguetweeting and like, be mindful of dogwhistles like "black and white thinking"

yeah I love the line of thinking of like "well it's not my fault if people misinterpret my message." well no, of course not, but it should still concern you

I just read through that twitter thread, and this may be beside the point, but what's wrong with a Harajuku themed party?

I always thought Misery Business was kind a Christian viewpoint of a song. or at least, that was an element to it. I'd imagine bands around that time, especially Christian ones, had songs that painted themselves anti promiscuity, anti secular, or anti sex. I always felt MB reflected that to a degree.

One of the people who was like big agree was many rooms which, if im remembering correctly, earlier in this thread it was talked how they blocked ppl to defend their friend accused of abuse.

I said it on twitter buy my main problem with diy is how so many ppl who complain about howits a clique are the same ones who enforce the you gotta know somebody and coolness social rules. but thats not unique to that hobby or scene or whatever
