I'm reading this at work, so bare with me. but basically John D was being too friendly... along with just being a real insecure weirdo? can someone give me a clearer picture here?

I've been a MG fan for about 12 yrs now, seen them in concert, etc and I know the man clearly has some demons. so I'm not really surprised, but I'm also hoping he's mentally okay. quite alarming.

 

maybe I missed something here. But that was all very confusing, and while all their interactions came off as stilted and straight up fucking weird, I didn't get a sense of any abuse.

Came across as someone just throwing up someone's manic depression/bipolar episodes all over the internet. I don't know, I'm sure I'm just not understanding it.

This is legit so upsetting and why I have such an issue with age gaps when one is either not an adult or barely one. I've seen these power dynamics at play far too often and have experienced some of these feelings myself and I couldn't even get thru the tweets. Stories like this are why I automatically think older men who date younger (not adult or barely adult) women are sus af and idk why ppl defend those relationships so often ugh.

Yes....and here are my thoughts. I've tried reading a lot of it and processing it all, but besides some power imbalance issues, it seems like this person (the fan) is trying to call out John for being, well not mentally well. Which, regardless of what JD did, is making the whole thing worse in my eyes. I'm not sure why the queer thing is at play. I'm not sure why this person is considered "young" (adult in their 20s right?). Was this sexual at all? I'm still not exactly sure of the context of a lot of it and maybe I can't even put any real conjecture or support behind any of it. So take this with a grain of salt. By their own admission, this fan is not mentally stable and well, neither is John. I just feel bad for both of them to different degrees. I don't think John was actively trying to be a creep or anything of that nature. Again, this is hard to read through and look at objectively when you kind of assume JD has some issues.

But I do agree with the fan on this, and I don't interact with TMG fanbase, I only buy their records occasionally and go see them play when I can, that they need to stop treating JD as some kind of sage or 2nd coming of Christ. So this was an eye opening experience to say the least. The fanbase is kind of cult-y and stranger than I thought apparently. I hate hero worship or cults of personalities and whathaveyou. I love, love, love (heh) The Sunset Tree, and if you know any of the background of JD, you know he has issues. Nobody can write songs like that and not have some sort of deep hang ups. I would think he has emotional disorders of some kind. So this is just hard.

 

Yeah, not a Mountain Goats fan, not tapped into their cult-ish following at all, but the JD callout makes me uncomfortable for a lot of reasons.

 

The follow-up tumblr post makes me feel even weirder about this whole thing.
