I think the question about cultures is fair. Hypothetical: if there was a Saudi Arabian musician on a playlist who spoke out against homosexuality (in a country where gay men are put to death by the state), would you all be for banning them from Spotify's playlists?

 

I mean, preferably yes but we also go off of what we know and it makes more sense to start in your backyard than try and fix all the world's problems at once. It's different when there is someone who is massively influential in our culture and someone we are confronted with on a daily basis who is known to beat women that acquaintances and music figures alike are defending

It's a false equivalency because you can't fight for every cause but you need to fight for the ones that you're aware of

I don't think Spotify are cowards. I think they just did not think this through nearly enough internally before they rolled it out. Does anyone have a copy of their actual policy? They took it off their site..

Idk if it was posted here, but I read that most of the artists taken off playlists had their streams go up due to all the publicity. That's kinda fucked.

 

I guess expected though, streisand effect. would have an effect in the long run though.
