I understand the dislike of the use of AI in a lot of media but I can’t say it should be completely thrown away and never used…i think there is a lot of really good use for it in a lot of different venues

I don't understand how you can say this and not parse that the former example would be put to work at putting the people in charge of the latter out of a job. You realize CGI doesn't just get randomly generated, right, and that there are people who work thankless hours to make that art?

Look, can the umbrella of technologies we call “[generative] AI” or “machine learning” or whatever be applied to specific contexts in a genuinely useful and ethical ways? Sure. But, I promise you, the places that it gets called out are not those places. And, the problem isn’t just people being reactionary luddites scared of advancement, lol.

I’m sure a debate could be had on, like, should AI use be part of the same “accountability” thread that sex pests and bigots are discussed? But… idk. Some of those “what’s the point of this thread???” debates feel like an even bigger waste, lol. Especially since this thread has little power outside of informing people in this community who wanna know how to spend their time & money, and occasionally be a space for people to share their own stories. Don’t think AI use is as questionable topic to be included as, say, some of the weirder gossipy things that occasionally prop up. I’m certainly all for finding out who’s using that technology as a lazy plagiarism tool!

My big problems with AI are that they put artists out of work and it generally looks pretty awful.

Edit: Strictly when it comes to generated images and videos. I work in tech and AI has made my job easier.

There are definitely some practical uses of AI, but I do not trust any company to ever say “Yes, that’s enough AI.”

No one's really complaining about practical uses of it, though. I only see people complain about generative AI that rips off artists.

I think a lot of the complaints are just about the capitalism of it all too. Like there are practical uses that are absolutely for good reasons and then there are ones that are made to make rich people richer and also clutter up our ability to use resources effectively which isn’t necessarily an artistic use but still feels foul. But I think it’s totally fair to acknowledge that there are good uses while also acknowledging that capitalism will not ever prioritize that and will always just want to generate profits for rich people and fire poor people for AI instead

I feel like "AI" as a whole has gotten a bad reputation because of some of its uses (and justifiably so) to the point where people shut down the idea just from hearing the term "AI", but there is still a lot of good uses that can come out of it. I started using it lately at work when I'm stuck with computer code (SQL or DAX) and I need help figuring it out an 95% of the time it resolved my issues.

It can also be used in other fields. Imagine getting bit by a snake and then describing it to an AI so it can identify it and tell you how dangerous it is. It can be used for good.

  18. I'm equally amused and horrified by the fact that the public got access to generative AI music tools and instead of even trying to use it creatively everyone was immediately like "what if we made even MORE Drake songs"
