Don't get me started on Tekashi69. We tried to get a NJ venue to cancel his performance there, and they chose not to do it. Starland originally had the show, but they dropped it when they found out about him.

I mean shit, most of my kids are riding for Cosby too. I’m fascinated by how they get their news/info to take up opinions like that. Social media as citizen journalism is pretty damn horrifying

But we all already know that

i really hope a lot of these kids just dont know better and will grow out of riding for these people. it took me a while to really care about social justice in the music i listened to

Yeah my sis is 18 and knows about xxx but continues to listen anyway. She says I'm "weird" about everything. I'm guessing a lot of people have a similar mindset. People often know things are bad but don't wanna be inconvenienced with thinking about it

yeah, my sister really doesn't care that much either. she had both neck deep and kodak black songs in the car and she's going to warped this year even after i mentioned how problematic it is, got mad after i mentioned it

I think a lot of kids that age have a hard time with parsing out art vs artist but idk

also a lot of voices telling them not to listen to so and so artists are much older and i feel like kids naturally want to rebel and do what older people tell them not to do

Tbh grown adults have an issue with it so it doesn't surprise me that kids do too. If someone during my fangirl heyday of mcr had told me some horrible allegation I'm guessing i would've reacted badly and ignored it too

    Agreed on both counts

  10. I think as someone who’s a lot younger than the general crowd on this site it’s kind of weird for me. I generally am quicker at least for someone my age to drop artists based on allegations but I still feel left out when I see friends enjoy the same artists (example: a couple of my friends went to the last Moose Blood tour but I didn’t even though I was allowed to).

Neck Deep is a different story, but I’ve already been down that rabbit hole twice in this thread alone.

The systems in place make it easier to listen to abusers than to ignore them. People are rewarded for the passive action of leaving something alone, and there are so many risks in calling it out.

Someone like XXX got a ton of publicity from being an awful piece of shit, with violent criminal behavior. That publicity leads to views, plays, attention, conversation, youtube videos, forum discussion, just general buzz that so many artists could never dream of. You have a large audience of people who have heard about him through this publicity, which again, is based off of his terrible actions. And these people make a conscious decision to separate the art the from the artist and judge his music objectively, despite the fact that he is largely known because of his abusive behavior. The fans separate the art from the artist, but that art is not separate from the actions of the artist, who is able to profit off of their violent behavior.

There is a huge disconnect here, and a lot of music industry infrastructure in place to make sure that this system works to protect awful people. There are a lot of abuser involved in the music industry, and very few people can make a career without some connection to a shitty person. This is by design. This system was built for this, and it works.

So Spotify attempts to make a stand, so minor a stand that they are still hosting music from abusive artists, just not actively promoting it. And they cave immediately. Because the system in place punishes any deviation from the established order. And again, that established order is never holding anyone accountable for their actions, even when those actions are used to inform and spread an artist's art. Its much more profitable to be a piece of shit, you'll have a ton of defenders already in the system who just want to go along with the current order. If you try to change that order, the entire system attacks you.

I guess long story short, free will is an illusion, and these systems govern behavior. An artist has no incentive to change awful behavior because there is no chance they'll face any repercussions. The system in place rewards and protects abusive people, and the fans actively participate in keeping this system together. The whole thing needs to be torn down and replaced, and that involves a lot of people going down with it.

I mean it definitely sucks that spotify is backing off of this.. but the real issue is in the music industry. At least Spotify tried to do something.. then they got pressured to back off of it.. to me in this type of situation it doesn't seem like they have much of a choice if they want to survive.

spotify doesnt get any fucking credit for "at least trying to do something" if they backed off under pressure. fuck them and fuck this rhetoric trying to take blame away from their cowardly stance.

i would like to know what other artists besides kendrick threatened to pull their music. spotify should've let them pull their fucking music, they'd be back within weeks. if kendrick came out and said i pulled my music from spotify to protest xxx not being on their playlists he would've gotten considerable backlash. people can play ignorant now and say 'well it just says 'reports say' kendrick was gonna do this so we dont know for sure' and kendrick won't receive hardly any backlash.

Honestly thinking about canceling my account. I've had it since spotify launched in the US. The only thing stopping me from doing it now is that I have a family plan with my girlfriend and her sister and want them to have a say.

Ngl when men protect abusive men like that my instinct is to always wonder what skeletons they have. I feel like men sometimes cape for other sucky men because if their own scandal eventually gets blown up and publicized they want to be protected and forgiven too. Like a creepy boys club of enablers. Maybe I just don't get it cause I'm unloyal af in that sense
