Call me unreasonable, but if I was friends with someone who was grooming and abusing girls, I'm not associating with them again. I don't care how many years it's been and what level of introspection they've done. My morals and theirs don't align and I'm not spending time with them. If as an adult you didn't think it was wrong to prey on underage girls, get the fuck out of my life forever.

 

yeah, it's one thing to want to see someone you're close to get better after they've done terrible things, but if that person themselves doesn't want to get better and take accountability for their actions, why the hell are you still associating with them? it makes you look like you condone their actions.

 

I’m not sure if anyone who associates themselves with JL would think that. I’ve had to forgive people in my personal life for terrible shit they’ve done and people they’ve hurt. Think what you want of JL, but it’s harsh (imo) to judge those like Andy, KD, other friends / family of his for their current relationship with him. Who knows what they’ve gone through with him in order to repair and maintain that relationship. None of us do, that I do know. My focus is on earning accountability for those who were affected by JL and his actions.

reading back through that, it really makes me laugh when people say they are "of Jewish faith." Faith as a religious concept is and was a historically distinguishing factor of Christianity. Observant Jews don't have "faith" in God like Christians do, they uphold the covenant via actions and community, a way of life. What does it mean to be "of Jewish faith" and also a secular Jew? Nothing, it's contradictory

It's not how Jews conceive of their/our (using our from here for convenience, I am not observant though) relationship to God. Faith in the Christian sense is essentially individual belief, and it is a key to salvation. You have faith, believe in God (among other things depending who you ask), and you are saved. In Judaism, you don't do or believe things because they will guarantee salvation, you do Judaism - perform the mitzvahs, study Torah, and do all of this communally as Jews - because it fulfills the binding covenant the Jews made with God, and fulfilling this covenant sanctifies life and repairs the world (kiddush Hashem and tikkun olam). "Faith" in the Christian sense is about individual belief, Judaism is about trust in and loyalty to God’s covenant, lived out through collectively upholding our agreement with God, being good partners in creation, sustaining the Jewish people, and shaping a just and holy society.
