you could quote me back directly, first off. secondly, it’s a banana costume. not his clothing. no one ripped off his actual clothing.
Sure, I clearly must be racist and not concerned for other people's safety or their right to do whatever the fuck they want to unwind at a concert they paid money for. Jesus Christ, what the fuck, man.
me: i wonder slightly if the fact that the singer is a black man could have something to do with the discourse penlab: oh my god he’s calling me a racist
I don't know who you were directing your comment toward or what it was meant to imply; I assumed since I've been driving like 95% of the conversation on this topic that it was toward me and I got offended; if it wasn't toward me then my bad.
all i did was ask an essentially rhetorical question about something i think MIGHT have an impact on the way some people are treating this. not you specifically. i would have been much more direct if that was the case.
it means that black men in both general american culture and a lot of subcultures are perceived as more hostile, unhinged, and violent than their white counterparts, and i wonder if there would be the same backlash if akil was white. not i think or i know, i wonder.
How about we agree to mostly agree on the banana man incident and move on. Good lord. This thread was better when it was slimeposting.
Fair enough. Sorry I went off, tempers were flaring hot in here, and my hackles aren't fully lowered yet. That being said, I would hope the response to this would be the same no matter who it was. It should be anyway, and if anything I think the narrative has been more about "this is why the hardcore scene sucks" than against the frontman in particular.
that’s fair and i’m truly not trying to shut you down by bringing the racial aspect up, it’s more so just something i’m sensitive to particularly in a scene where POC are such a minority. i’ve spent way more energy than is needed on this so i’ll agree it would have been better if end it just kept the show moving and ignored him. and, also, if this discourages more banana costumes at shows maybe that isn’t the worst thing.
I don't think people should get to do "whatever the fuck they want" at a show just because they paid for it
Within reason. Like, my view has always been if something isn't hurting other people or negatively affecting them, then who gives a shit?
Im sure this discussion has happened a million times but at most of the shows i go to where crowd surfing is happening, its definitely not forced upon anyone, and its the vibe of show and what people signed up for. There are always areas to stand to avoid it if its not your thing. Its gone on long enough, and it doesnt really fit the intent of the thread for its mildness, but calling out specific people and ragging on them for how they're enjoying your music (and given you their money) is lame. Its crazy that some of ya'll are annoyed by the banana costume anyway but i guess i see why. Ive never found it anything other than mildly amusing when people show up in a costume and didnt realize fellow attendees or bands had any issues with it.
I don’t think Gen Z really knows how to attend concerts anymore, given how awful folks’ behavior has been? Like…millennials would never (right?) it also depends on the vibe of the gig. I’m all about letting folks have fun and live their lives, but sometimes it’s just Doing The Most (and you’re not the main character). anyway, if you’re showing up to a hardcore show in a banana suit I’m at least going to call you tf out because you’re prolly already tall and blocking my view even more like an actual CLOWN (i am just a tiny gal who likes hardcore but also likes being able to see what concert she’s at)
I’d argue standing around in a circle while everyone two steps, stage dives, and tries to hit other people is also big me me me energy. Isn’t hardcore supposed to be about unity and community?
I'll take a dude dressed as a banana over gaggles of mother fuckers dressed normally screaming their conversations over performers during shows
