If you were at a play, and in the balcony seats there was a dude dressed WILD and completely out of place, you wouldn’t be thinking about it a little bit? You wouldn’t be wondering if they’re part of the show or not, or what their reasoning is for wearing said outfit? And all the time you were thinking about that, there are actors on stage trying to perform for you. Same idea it’s just in a little bit more chaotic environment
If he was causing a problem for the audience, I agree then that responsible action should be taken to address that, but it sounds like the audience started cheering the costume before the singer dissuaded them. Just the whole thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I don't think we should be making excuses for a band to be irresponsible like that.
I don’t think anyone’s making excuses for the band. Pretty much everyone has said they chose the wrong path to deal with a problem. Most of us are simply answering “is there a problem to deal with at all”
For a minute, sure, but hardly enough to ruin the performance for me. I mean if we started treating all concertgoers this way for wearing weird shit...
if you think ripping a guys banana costume is bad wait until you learn how people like to dance at hardcore shows
The vibe of "why are we even talking about this" kind of feels like suggesting the band did nothing wrong. If we agree that they did, then that's something to discuss, or at least I think it is. I'm never sure what we're supposed to be talking about in here. Three or four pages of slime jokes is fine, but a case of bullying a guy in a costume is out of bounds. I don't know what the goalpost is.
As someone who is 5ft 7in, someone purposefully wearing something that makes them taller and obstructs the view more of everyone behind them is pretty lame.
For “YOU” but if you’re the band, those minutes aren’t happening at the same minute. So the band is sitting there saying “for my entire performance, a portion of this crowd is gonna be distracted by douchey banana dude.” idk man, I think it’s fairly clear why a performer wouldn’t like it. Some might not care. It might be a thing fans do. But I can see why a band wouldn’t like it. But “GET HIM!!!” Wasn’t the right move
Pen is in his bedroom typing with his banana costume hanging on the door, talking to him like the Green Goblin
What if it had been these guys that rolled up to that show, that band would have felt pretty dumb after
you don’t wear a fucking banana costume to a show, particularly a hardcore show, unless you have big me me me energy and want the spotlight. hardcore shows are a full contact sport, there’s no way banana man didn’t know that, and i really don’t think this is any type of accountability issue.
also banana man saying “fuck the police? while you police what others wear?” to a band fronted by a black man singing about police brutality and racial justice is dumb as fuck
I'd say a band telling fans to rip off someone's clothes is an accountability issue. Call the person out, mock them, etc., but asking people to assault them is crossing the line. Idc if they are seeking attention. That's not an excuse.
You guys have until 11:59pm EST to submit your takes on this issue before they’re sent off to be reviewed by the council
i do think it’s a little corny on end it’s part and not something i would have done if i was the one with the mic. however, i don’t think the guy actually got hurt, and people get the snot beat out of them at shows like this simply for standing nearby, let alone making themselves a bright yellow target. when you stand up close at a hardcore show, regardless of what you are wearing, you are consenting to being part of the action, and if he was genuinely concerned for his safety after they called him out, he could’ve gotten out of the pit. also, i’m not saying you’re doing this, but i do wonder slightly if the discourse would be the same if it was someone who doesn’t look like akil.
i for sure will say that there’s some barbara streisand effect going on with the idea of seeing him, clocking him as attention seeking, and then giving him even more attention
