I use to be a big Katy fan around time California dream now not so much anymore If it’s true I hope justice
There is good about AI that is completely overshadowed by the capitalist race to the bottom that it has become known for. Outside of that framework it's actively useful but how it's being used in our current climate? Nah, absolutely not.
Even the things AI is actually somewhat useful for (some medical and coding) it still messes up and I'm not sure how environmentally sustainable using it for even the useful things is. Granted if it was only used for that it would probably greatly help the impact but still.
You can't put that particular genie back in the bottle, and if it was used for the things you mention exclusively and not poisoned by capitalism, it'd probably be viewed much more favourably. But we are where we are with it now and it's a fucking scourge on an industrial level.
at bare minimum, it should be kept out of the hands of the common individual. i could see very limited use cases with it in scientific fields (e.g. i know someone who's using machine learning in her doctoral research to help combat hearing loss via inner-ear cell death), but even then, i'm not sure if the pros outweigh the many notable cons.
Right now data centers are akin to cars from the 1960's. They're inefficient, big, pollution machines. Currently, cars are the cleanest and most efficient they've ever been. Eventually data centers will be cleaner and more efficient as technology continues to evolve, but the big problem is that the damage done in the meantime is irreversible or at the very best will take a long time to fix and it's only if there's a future government who would actually want to fund these restoration projects - BIG IF.
And we need this to happen much, much fucking sooner than in another sixty-odd years. Until the point where there's a chance this can realistically happen, the whole so-called AI 'revolution' can go fuck itself.
Makes me truly sad if AI/anti-AI is the next polarization. We have got to get our heads together and realize that far-future/long-term desires and immediate-survival/short-term desires do not have to be incompatible. Talking to brilliant younger zoomers about AI and working in fields (like science) that are bound up deeply with AI progress has rly informed my perspective as a cautious skeptic.
They will move the data centers to space as satellites. It's in our best interest for this process to accelerate. AI taking over art is something I am against but ten years ago many of us were speaking of "gay space luxury communism" as a joke, and if we rally around UBI fueled by AI company taxes, and other measures that can actually coexist with the inevitable massive changes in our society (that no one is going to be able to stop) instead of clinging to a Luddite mindset that will only leave ppl behind, it will lead to better outcomes (imo) I work adjacent to scientists and the big AI firms and like, this train has already left the station, like yesterday. as someone struggling with preserving my inner ear cells after noise injuries and steroid treatments, I would be suuuuuper interested in your friend's research if you would care to share (and don't hate me for what I wrote above haha)
me too! technological change is accelerating and attempting to hold back the train is an absolutely futile process. we would be better served by figuring out areas of overlap between climate/earth interests and these corporation interests while this field is still somewhat nascent, and working in diplomacy and compromise to achieve those goals (e.g. moving data centers to space, cars trucks and freight trains eventually shifting to electric, organizing for displaced workers to be hired in monitoring/supervision etc). there's a time for resistance based organizing. that will not work when the speed of change is exponential even to those working on the frontier, as it is in the case of ai.
