Being a conservative absolutely makes someone a shit person. As both a trans and queer person, as well as an autistic person, and someone who cares about people of color and women's rights? Conservatism, even just fiscal conservatism, hurts all of these groups of people. All of the offense in the world, conservatism is a plague that has ruined the world.
My brother is gay. I just don't think things are always that black and white. I also don't know that just the act of being a conservative should be conflated with being prejudiced or racist, even if several of them are.
Gay conservatives are still bad people, yes. Liberalism is already too far to the right, let alone conservative liberalism. Again, it's a massive problem that has ruined the planet, literally. It's also ruined lives. The tightening of social safety nets until barely anyone qualifies, no universal Healthcare. Austerity measures are a net negative when social welfare programs are objectively better for people. American is an unhealthy, fat nation full of poor people who can't afford Healthcare, so they die not going to get problems that start small checked out. It absolutely is that black in white in the year 2026.
During the Covid shutdowns he was posting all the ivermectin, this is all a hoax, Rogan quotes, etc. etc. ever since that… I’d lean he’s probably in line with it in some form
Here's what I've found. First, it should be mentioned that Smith and Myers wrote the song "Not Mad Enough" from their duo project as a direct response to the death of George Floyd. "America Burning", per Smith, is about the riots in the wake of that and seeing white people destroy businesses of minorities. That's what they claim. So take that for what you will.
I can't find any of this, so maybe he got rid of all of it? Are you sure you're not thinking of someone else?
When I was in high school (well over a decade ago), my old tutor went to see them and got VIP. They asked her if she wanted to join them on tour for a few days. I heard somewhere that they still do this. Shinedown has always been gross.
one of the most annoying things to me about Trump is how much his over the top awfulness has managed to make people memory hole just how bad and evil conservatives have always been. like, even George W. Bush’s image has been rehabilitated in the eyes of some liberals bc they’re so blinded by Trump’s awfulness. this reminds me of that one post from a while back in the politics forum that’s become a little bit of a meme, where that one user was talking about his brother being in the military and was mad people were saying they hope a ship sinks that was going to help Israel or something. idk, memory’s a lil fuzzy on the details. anyway, what does your conservative gay brother think of trans people for example? like, what kinda conservative beliefs we talking here?
Lots of bad gay conservatives out there that say reprehensible things about members of their own and about other communities Lindsey Graham for example
I for one don’t think litigating whether or not Pen’s gay conservative-leaning brother is a bad person is the best use of the chorus dot fm “Accountability in Music” thread. But, that’s just me.
Start by understanding if my brother was anti-trans (or anti-anything, for that matter) I wouldn't be so quick to defend him.
this thread frequently devolves into much stupider and less relevant discussion all the damn time. didn’t y’all spend way longer talking about which christian rock bands you liked directly after another CCM fuckwad got exposed before you quelled it? I wouldn’t have said shit if Penlab didn’t outright dismiss Phantom Mountain’s entire (incredibly valid) post bc they can’t handle the notion that someone might consider their brother a bad person for his conservatism. a whole ass 42 year old adult can’t handle that maybe some queer and trans people who are currently suffering under the weight of the conservative party in this country might think their brother a bad person. like, y'all are the community here. the artists that get brought up in here are mostly entirely out of our reach and the only meaningful way we can hold them accountable is to spread awareness and not financially support or promote said artists. but y’all can (and have) actually learned and changed positions and thought patterns based on things marginalized users of the site have had to say, even when it’s harsh. y’all are the people who are within our reach! I don’t need Penlab to think his brother is bad or a piece of shit or whatever, but bristling so hard and dismissing a trans person for trying to give a perspective of why they’re less sympathetic? yeah, makes me feel like I would like to know if Penlab’s brother is a transphobe, because if so I don’t really want to correspond with them anymore because it matters to me if someone is willing to defend or excuse their transphobic family as a trans woman lol. let’s go back to talking about which butt rock band on the Trump fest bill is maybe not so bad.
how the fuck am I to know that? in all honesty, I was asking sincerely. what kind of conservative beliefs are we talking? I don’t care to know anymore, for the record, but it’s not an outrageous question to ask. transphobia is rampant among conservative gays.
I didn't even get more than one paragraph through noholds' post before blocking. I brought my brother up as an example of someone who is considered conservative who is not an asshole and doesn't fit the general image. I did not bring him up for people to start challenging why he might be an asshole, because I dunno, I thought if anything this thread might be one where people would adopt more sensitivity and rationality. I was wrong.
l o l, yeah just block all the trans users of the site while loudly announcing you didn’t read their entire post, that will show them!!!
I think defending conservatives is bad. I don't defend my conservative extended family. I'm fortunate enough not to have conservatives in my immediate family, though. That said, I don't think anyone needs to cut conservative members of their families out of their lives necessarily. I think, in many cases, it can make it easier to reach them if you don't cut them out and that's important for people who can handle it. To bring this back to music accountability... I wish it was easier to hold bands and artists accountable for the awful things they do. So often, it's feels like an entirely futile effort, but it is better to continue to try to keep our scenes safe for victims and potential future victims. Preventing future instances is so, so very important, yet with certain artists, it's nearly impossible for them to face any real repercussions. With Anti-Flag, at least they are not longer an active group who can go out and use the platform they had to harm others. That doesn't change the damage done, however, and that's devastating. They've given up their platforms but they haven't faced the consequences of their egregious actions. I believe in rehabilitation but rehabilitation can't happen when artists refuse to hold themselves truly accountable and society seems either unwilling or unable to do so.
