I can’t believe that band is still a thing. Thought that statement and their handling of the situation pretty much ended them for good. Guess I shouldn’t be surprised though. Horrible.

Someone posted in a Facebook group I was in like 3 years ago "don't listen to Many Rooms they don't care if you've been sexually assaulted" without any context and no one interacted with it at all. Had no idea what it was in reference to but have been weirded out since... this... confirms that

Very uncomfortable with a white woman calling a black woman a liar even after the dude fucking admitted to doing it.

we as a society have made a habit of not believing WOC. See: entire Bill Cosby situation

  14. And a very long history of white people silencing woc.

it is well-documented that black people in particular are discredited when they try to seek justice for crimes committed against them. it makes me uncomfortable to see someone using their privilege to continue a legacy of racism to "Stand by their friend."

Oh wait the victim was the singer of Bleed the Pigs? There was a discussion about good hardcore with non-male members a few pages back, and BTP is (Was?) an incredibly good band.

(If there was more said that I missed by all means correct me)
But is it possible to say “you don’t know the whole story” without it meaning “the victim is lying”?
I’m asking from a genuine place of wanting to talk about it and work through my thoughts and hear others. I hope that’s recognized.

  18. The other tweets make me think that's not likely:

except that post was in regard to a post saying "you guys defended an abuser" so...i mean there's nothing wrong about that regardless of knowing what the whole story is

  20. I think it is possible, but I also struggle to see what missing part of the story could possibly matter in this situation or situations like it. I think that's the larger issue here.

I also don't think a friend - who is automatically a third party - is whose word we should be taking as to what the "whole story" was. That phrasing DOES kind of imply the victim was being dishonest. The victim's story was absolutely appalling and I'm not gonna assume random friend no.5 knows better what "really" happened.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I guess I’m speaking more generally or “rule of thumb” as opposed to this one situation because I don’t know anything about it. Was just using that tweet as a jumping off point.
    I appreciate all input!

Sorry to get off topic from Better Off, but I wanted to get some thoughts on what others think our responsibility is in general to vet new or existing artists we enjoy in terms of their character as it pertains to sexual assault and other nefarious actions.

For context, I used to spend a good amount of time looking into new bands or artists I was enjoying by looking through the various social media accounts and reading/watching interviews if I could find them. I just wanted to have an idea of how the band/artist conducts themselves. Once incidents of people being outed began popping up more and me getting better educated by peers, I increased that type of priority. I realized I wouldn't be perfect, but I felt better that I was doing something at a base level.

Now that I am getting older, have been working longer hours, using less social media, and generally not online as much, I find myself not going through that process much any longer. Part of me feels like I should be doing more to make sure the people I support aren't doing disgusting things, but it's also a time consuming process to go through.

It's pretty easy for me to act accordingly on artists like Brand New and Kanye imo. However, I want to also feel good about where and who I give support/money.

In my opinion it really doesn’t need to be that long of a process. Usually if you google search the band, if they have a history it’ll be on the first 2 pages of google.

it's a weird spot because i don't think people should need to google search "abuse" with every band they find and listen to. but also people generally aren't as plugged in as most of us are to the music scene, i can imagine someone having brand new pop up on a spotify playlist and them never become more serious a listener than that. i think the more important thing is just being aware and willing to challenge your own listening and be accepting when news of abuse is heard
