John // OC now, OH forever.

To preface, I think Morgan Wallen sucks for reasons other than his vocabulary. He’s crafted a whole image that is just him pandering to conservatives and none of it really seems genuine.

If we’re gonna criticize Wallen for using a slur, we’ve gotta do the same to Posty despite him being a nice guy. You don’t get a “pass”. There’s no excuse for it. It doesn’t make him a giant piece of a shit overall, but it’s worth at least noting. There’s a bunch of other dumb shit Posty’s said in interviews (like comparing people criticizing him as “reverse racism” or being into conspiracy theories) that make me think he’s kind of a dumbass.

I think Morgan Wallen is just really like that. Pretty sure he brought Candice Owens out at his show once?

Yeah, don’t mean to absolve Post. He said it and asked for forgiveness, but still said it.

I do think he’s been moving away from the culture vulture stuff for awhile. The jump over to Wallen and country wasn’t an all-of-a-sudden thing.

Mostly, I think he’s just kind of a dumb guy, as others have said.

That didn’t happen. His mom once voiced support for her, but that’s about it.

Oh okay, someone brought her out iirc.

Did just read that he was following her on Instagram so I’ll go ahead and assume he likes her like his mother.

I'm mad already today that I saw a picture of Morgan Wallen. My own fault. I'll try to be better from now on.

  7. I'm definitely not trying to give PM a pass. I do think the circumstances are different, both in their age when they said it, the tone in which they used it, and the way for which they apologized it. Which again, none of that makes it better, no one deserves a pass and it is absolutely worth noting when we discuss PM aping black culture for a portion of his career, I'm just saying it does make the situations feel different, at least to me. But who gives a shit how I feel about it, and I mean that earnestly lol.

in personal pseudo-accountability today, I realized that the ‘hawk tuah’ thing was not something problematic involving pretendians lol. Had def geared up for some discourse but I couldn’t really have been more wrong with what it actually came from

I went to a show the other day and in one of the opening bands they had a fill in guitarist, Anthony Sanders, performing. He was accused of sexual assault a number of years ago while part of the band The Island of Misfit Toys and I remember there being articles/posts about it on the internet. It was a bummer seeing him platformed on stage again (I think he disappeared from playing music publicly since the incident) but when I went to look up information about what he did to share with someone, it was all gone, which is unfortunate if he is trying to get back into the music scene because people will have no idea about his past. (Also I don't believe he ever fully took accountability at the time too)

I know it’s my fault for clicking on the first two of them I saw on Instagram but the ‘young guy holding a tiny lav mic in his hand interviewing passers-by on a busy street in a college town on a Friday night’ reel genre makes me feel 1000 years old. And the expedient proliferation of Hawk Tuah merch and attempted monetization across the web makes me feel like I need to go live on a farm and never talk to anyone again.

I think, in a vacuum, there’s something funny and even sweet/innocent about letting your brain spit out, pun intended, something that is culturally taboo enough to make you blush but actually not taboo or unusual at all. But, outside of that vacuum, the way the Internet introduces so many problematic para-social and capitalist elements to a simple clip ruins what should be a half-chuckle, half-aww reaction you feel for 1 second then never think about again.

Still never looked up the origin of the Hawk Tuah thing and also muted those two words on twitter.

On the subject of being used for internet fodder, the thought has occurred to me, as someone who exists in public in Los Angeles, that I could be in some dumb prank or interview video one day. And I’ve thought about what I could say or do pre-emptively to ensure my footage isn’t used.

You don’t want to “win” or try to out-weird them or ruin their shot because that’ll unintentionally make for good footage for them, so the best I’ve come up with is to gray rock them or plug a product or website that they think you’re genuinely trying to co-opt their video to promote. Like just say “This is an official ad for DraftKings.com” over and over again.

When I used to go to protests a lot in college, I would spend the several hours afterwards looking up pictures of the protest on Twitter to make sure that my face was not pictured anywhere I was so paranoid about becoming viral. It was like a weird paranoia and that was before these little tiktok interview things even existed.

It honestly feels kind of skeezy when they do those street interviews outside of clubs and stuff because somebody who might otherwise be a little more cautious might be more willing to do those interviews after they've been drinking and then regret it after

If I was walking in the park or something and some guy stopped to ask me what song I'm listening to I'd just assume they were trying to kidnap me or something lol

I’ve seen reels where the people are basically cornered or accosted into being on camera. So my plan to repeatedly promote DraftKings.com is for when I have no exit or other option. Lol.

If someone with a camera asked me something random on a street and somehow my answer would make me a meme then I would probably want to die
