Ok since I'm trying to procrastinate on paperwork I went back into that thread and looked around. Multiple people agreed with you that they don't particularly love the album. I just told you I don't love the album either. The point was that in terms of arguing about the merits of the passion or subject matter, you and I are out of our depth on that one. Cwhit came at you kinda hard but everyone else in that thread was really chill about arguing their point. If the worst part of an online argument was that someone called you a fool, then it's really not that bad and you probably need to get over it.

I get you. This person found that post and was able to identify the one instance I described in my original post but I've seen this pattern countless times over with other people in different threads in the last few years. It really isn't about that one argument and I don't want to re-litigate that argument again as this thread has started to do.

I just get triggered when I feel like I see a bunch of people ganging up on one person who really meant no harm. Bullying is a trigger of mine. I don't mind it as much when I'm bullied - I can fend for myself - but I hate seeing other people targeted whether intentional or not. That other person apologized and it wasn't good enough for people. That person clearly felt like they were being ganged up on too and voiced that in their words but it fell on deaf ears and that is why I finally decided to post something.

I wish cancel culture was actually a thing. I love watching the trash get taken out. Sadly for everyone like Harvey Weinstein that actually faces consequences there are a hundred more like him who don’t.

I mean, it's possible for this thread to be extremely helpful and also toxic for some folks periodically. I've seen it happen. I don't think that's the case here, but I do think it's always good to remember that having good intentions or being more progressive than someone else doesn't give us the right to lash out at others. I'm not saying it happens all the time, but it's always good to extend kindness to those who are open about learning and trying to be better.

 

Your post is totally reasonable and valid imo. This forum could do a lot better at showing kindness to others. Just because someone doesn't "get" something right away doesn't mean that chasing them away so they don't learn anything is a good alternative. As long as someone isn't being hateful and malicious, of course.

 

Deleted my post because nothing good is going to come of it, but thanks. People are mostly kind here and I'm literally just asking we keep that in mind when we post. I'm not even commenting on the current situation, it's just always relevant and a good reminder. Helping others learn about accountability is a good thing.

 

Yeah, that's fair and I wasn't necessarily referring to the current situation either. I agree people are kind for the most part, especially compared to how AP used to be.

 

There are (many) instances on this site when people deserve to be called out for problematic/offensive/bigoted behavior. But sometimes the calling out turns into namecalling or personal attacks. I don’t post all that much but I’ve followed Chorus (and AP before) since 2009. AP was worse with the name calling but I still see personal attacks on here semi-regularly. I’m not referencing what all just happened in this thread, the user who indicated that mental illness is a reason to doubt survivors deserved rebuke and IMO it didn’t cross into bullying.

An example of what I AM talking about occurred in the Politics thread a month or so back - someone told a user (and high school teacher) that every student he’d taught had been greatly disserviced. Those are the types of comments that I would like to see clamped down on.

But also - no that is not being canceled (does that EVER happen?). And isn’t at all comparable to systemic injustice whatsoever.

It’s something else entirely that IMO should still be addressed
