That doesn’t mean it’s fake though?? We don’t even have any of the supposed evidence to validate that it did not happen, and also that evidence could be edited, photoshopped, manipulated, made up, etc.

People need to stop being so quick to be like “this is fake/didn’t happen”. Doing so is incredibly shitty and not helpful in the movement for survivors to come forward and tell their stories of abuse. At worst, you believed a liar and you just get to move on with your life. At best, you believed a survivor of sexual assault who was brave enough to come forward with their story (this time about a huge pop star) and face tons of ridicule, backlash, and people saying they are lying.

Yeah, immediately jumping to something being fake just because the powerful man in question is trying to silence what’s going on is a big concern to me, as is the idea that everything happening all at once is an excuse to “not take any of this seriously”. I guess that was in the other thread since the discussions are happening in two places, but I have a problem with anyone framing it that way.

this sums up something i have been trying to figure out how to communicate (specifically with my male friends) over the past few years. like everything in american life, this issue has been turned into one of “personal responsibility” when it is increasingly clear that this is a systemic problem with entire concepts like intimacy, consent, masculinity/gender, power, etc etc. the entire way these concepts are discussed beginning in early childhood need to be revamped. and i don’t say that to let people off the hook for their actions, but when you look around and - as you said - see that most men have violated consent or been abusive in some way, you have to ask what conditions are creating this outcome. we haven’t really been doing that in the mainstream discussion because we want to handle these issues on an individual-level still, and that’s because it’s an easy conversation to have.

yes yes yes yes, all of this. Feel free to reach out to me if you want to talk more privately about this. It can be a hard thing to discuss because, in my experience, some people will assume you do want to let people off the hook and not be able to see beyond that for a good faith discussion.

I’m really over my fear of my contributions as a woman and survivor being taken to be bad faith arguments.

edited to add; that being said I’m very grateful for how my earlier comments were received & engaged with, always unsure of how things like that will go

Justin Beiber being a shitty person again is probably the least surprising thing about 2020.

That’s a... weird statement. Did his lawyer right it from his account? “I wanted to make sure I gathered the facts”.

Seems like a weirdly specific denial, the hotel chain is the least bit of information I'm concerned with and there would be tons of reasons that people on his team have receipts at different hotels. He even said their reservation "got messed up", which could mean anything. Weird strategy, definitely seems like it came from a lawyer, its so tone deaf.

Yup. I imagine when Bieber tours he has a large entourage of crew/manager(s), assistants, etc. so there were probably multiple reservations under numerous names (and Justin's name probably wasn't used for a reservation).

Looking in the twitter replies, I see a lot of people comparing and contrasting this to melanie martinez and how she was proven innocent. Is that true? I looked into it and didn't find any evidence of that being the case

Just because he didn't stay at that hotel that night, that doesn't mean he couldn't have been there. I, uhhh, what?

Like, even if he didn't personally book a room at Four Seasons, how could the hotel definitively say he wasn't on the premises without looking through the security tapes?

No, people will take any minor inconsistencies in a story to say it's "disproven" even if it isn't prohibitive of the allegations being true.

In the Melanie case, her instgram proved she wasn't in town the day the accuser said the assault happened. The obvious explanation was that the survivor switched phones and the date in the metadata on the phone reflected the day she switched photos, and not the actual day.

But that shouldn't even matter, cause evem if the dates were wrong, they clearly did indicate that they and Melanie did have a sleepover, and Melanie did admit they were intimate in her rebuttal so like?

However people used that inconsistency as a catalyst to psychoanalyze every detail of her life and call her a liar. This one absolutely disgusting person did multiple whole hour long videos about the most inane shit, like saying that if the the accuser was truly traumatized, she wouldn't go to a Youtuber's house for an interview alone.
