There's a lot wrong with the prison system and it fails a lot of decent people but locking up paedos is definitely something that it does right lol

God I am so depressed after reading all this

I know that you probably think this is just "a bunch of crazy internet dudes trying to be better than everyone" but no this is just depressing as hell and we are all sad

Yep, which is both statistically likely & psychologically how that kinda thing typically works.

It's kind of a whole thing that anyone involved in any field that intersects w/ this topic, or anyone w/ first or second hand exposure to, understands.

Please do not compare as if we are on the same side. I'm so depressed that people like you are trying to say that we're treating abuses of power and paedophilia "too seriously" when punishments are given for reasonable amounts of time. You not wanting your brother-in-law to be held accountable disgusts me, and it makes me sad because I want you to say/do good and you so obviously won't. It makes me sad that people like you are out there being this way and refusing to listen and/or change. I don't want to be "better than you", I want you to be good and you continue to refuse to consider that path.

A person can hold a special place in your heart, & have done good things, & y'know what, yeah, even still have potential for a positive existence (w/ certain restrictions)... & still have acted in a genuinely awful way that deserves geniunely severe repercussions.

Will you not acknowledge that what someone would normally get is probably not enough due to a very broken justice system, and that many people who do what he did are not properly held accountable?

My best friend’s entire life has been in shambles because he was taken advantage of by a 52 year old teacher starting when he was 15. He was also almost murdered by the husband. My friend was again ... 15. He lives every day with anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, PTSD, and can’t hold a relationship 11 years later. It also started with “just a kiss.“

To try and argue the length of 20 years being TOO LONG for a pedophile is fucked. The teacher’s punishment was “being fired for undisclosed reasons.” That’s it. The system is absolutely backwards and to try and defend any of this or any artist (even if they are your own brother or your fav band in high school) upsets me on every level.

No. In your example there was a crime and the person was punished for their crime. That’s it.

How do you throw out your story to appeal to emotions (when this all started w/ just a drunk post about how to engage w/ 20-yr-old Eminem lyrics)... get upset when people aren't humanizing this brother-in-law of yours enough... then somehow just completely disregard someone else's emotional story?

I see a lot happened while I was at work. Just want to throw out my usual reminder that forgiveness is something victims get to give, not other people. You don’t get to decide that all is forgiven for someone who lives with what was done to them every day.

I've written more than enough about this over the years that I'm not about to just keep having the exact same conversations time and time again. I don't have the mental space to keep subjecting myself to that cycle. I've done it thousands of times already. I've heard every "differing opinion" and every "reason" that people want to use to continue to publicly celebrate abusive people without any kind of accountability or justice process. I find zero value in re-having that same debate for the upteenth time, but on the off chance you want more context, here's where to start and a better place to learn:

I think public support and praise for people that have abused others, from Louis CK to Bill Cosby to those within our our music scene, are assholes. Want to enjoy it in the privacy of your own home? Fine, I don't care what you do, but when you do it in public, and you make that statement to the world, I do not care what your opinion is on anything related to these topics anymore. Your opinion means nothing to me at that point, and yes, I believe the choice to publicly choose "art!" over "human being that was* harmed" makes you an asshole.

*and continue to be in many cases

I just had a follow up question to this cause it's kind of where I get at a sticking point with some friends. This may be semantics and/or pointless, and if so, please ignore. When you say assholes are those who are making statements to support or praise others in public, who have abused others, how far does that go? Does that refer to those who talk about enjoying Kevin Spacey movies? Or Any movie Louie CK, Cosby, etc, is in? How far back in the music scene? Referring to anyone who likes the Beatles? Chili peppers?

I really do find this thread informative, and if this is posted elsewhere, I'd gladly like to read more.

  23. I can only speak from my personal belief, but yeah, I think those praising the new Louis CK special, for example, are assholes (and said as much when Gruber did it a little while ago). I think that praising something the person has been in is a little more wishy-washy, and there's nuance and various things depending on the situation itself in there and when. Like, I haven't seen it in years, but LA Confidential is (was?) one of my favorite movies, but I don't think I'd go around talking about that any time soon.

Regarding the Beatles and Brand New and all that, the best I've been able to come up with is what I wrote in on Nov 12, 2017. Personally, I don't think someone that generally praises the Beatles, in 2020, is an asshole in the same way I think someone with a Daisy avatar defending abusive content is.
