Newsboys Owner Wes Campbell Resigns From Gospel Music Association Board Over Michael Tait Scandal

Campbell states in the above article that Michael Tait also abused members of the Campbell family, but this bit right here grabbed my attention as well:

“Members of our own families have now come forward and shared that they, too, are victims,” he wrote. “My heart is shattered at the pain that has been expressed by so many as we are learning even dating back as far as three decades ago.”

That would be back during the DC Talk days as well then. So why, again, have his DC Talk bandmates and brothers, Toby Mac and Kevin Max, continued to remain silent as all of this seemingly builds to a crescendo? Their silence speaks volumes.

Steve Taylor, former producer and songwriter for the Newsboys, has addressed allegations the band’s management covered up an alleged rape, calling claims of ignorance by Newsboys’ owner Wes Campbell “utter nonsense.”

“This is a cover up of, like, mafia-like clout, and the whole thing needs to burn,” Taylor said, in an interview on Christianity Today’s podcast The Bulletin.

“That’s utter nonsense, and frankly makes me really angry,” he said to Cosper. “When I read that part of the story—I don’t think even Wes was named, but Newsboys Inc, which is Wes Campbell—the thought that he didn’t even know his own brother was covering up is utter nonsense.”

Taylor said that he had long experienced Newsboys Inc owner Wes Campbell to be “ethically challenged.” And he recounted moments in his career when he confronted the mogul about his concerns for the band.

“On those occasions, Wes would change some decisions he was making based on pressure from me,” Taylor said in the interview. “And I remember times when he claimed to thank me for pointing these things out. But it seemed like it was happening with more and more frequency where I found I didn’t trust him anymore.”

Highlighting the fact that Campbell owns the band in its entirety since Furler left in 2009, Taylor shared that the band members are on salary. This enables Campbell to run the band like a business that represented his interests, Taylor added.

Yeah I think what also gets me about Wes’s statement is that, by claiming he’s aware of allegations of “pain” from all the way back in the 90s, that would mean he’s aware of other instances of abuse that have not been reported. So he’s also still complicit in that as well.

 

Olivia continues to lead by example at such a young age. Earlier this week there was a story that came out saying she prioritized the mental health of her band/crew and offered to pay for therapy visits on the road. Not sure if this should be posted in this thread, or just the Guts thread, but impressive stuff from her.

 

Personally, I view the accountability threads to be for when a person says or does something that they should be held accountable for. So, I’d say it doesn’t need to be posted here and could just be posted in an Olivia thread. But there’s also no harm in posting it here.

One day a band I enjoyed won't have a fucking dickhead in it. Today is not that day.

 

I just saw something about Ryan Adams and haven't thought about him in a long time. Out of curiosity I looked him up. He released THIRTEEN albums and three cover albums since the accusations.

And no one has cared about any of them. I know there's talk about how cancellation isn't real, but it absolutely killed his career. I know he still tours, but he's long forgotten for the most part. Maybe it's not from 100 to 0, but at least down to like 20%

 

that's a hilariously high output with like no public impact or reception. and to think that he thought not taking accountability would hurt his career, but nobody has given a fuck in a long time.
