Everything I’ve heard from them on the podcast about Michael Jacobs has only repeatedly confirmed what an unrepentant asshole that guy is.
It wasn't until a few years ago I heard that Corey's personality was modeled after Jacobs' (as he created the character) and re-watching the show as an adult the high school/college era Corey is really unlikable.
IIRC, the rest of the cast doesn’t hate him (unless that’s changed). I know Ben just one day decided he didn’t want any of them in his life anymore, which is bizarre, but I felt the cast didn’t hate him for it. Just confused and probably hurt.
That whole podcast is a real Phoebe Bridgers situation where I’m glad they’re speaking their truth and, I assume, are well-intentioned. But also, it’s produced by Cinnamon Toast Shrimp guy Jensen Karp, who got outed as a horrible person, disappeared and has basically been in the background of anything his wife has done.
I feel like the pod also started right around when his brother got cancelled and he tried being a politician. I don’t blame him for not wanting to be involved in something he did 30 years ago, and that seemed like a rough set.
Yeah I do often have that in the back of my mind. I know Danielle has talked about how several years ago now Jensen was diagnosed as bipolar and has been on medication for it ever since and she has also said that she would not be with him were it not for the medication. But I also know that doesn’t excuse what he did before. And as for Ben, it’s also hard to say what’s going on with him. There are all kinds of rumors and it’s hard to weed through all of that, especially when he’s been so quiet. They’ve said he was always in their lives, went to their weddings, was at the hospital for the birth of Danielle’s son, etc. and then out of nowhere he just ghosted all of them. I know Trina has said there was particularly bad blood between her and Ben and that she was not a fan of him personally, so who knows if their friendship with her and apologies to her for how she was treated back then have anything to do with it or if it’s even a contributing factor at all. I do remember that he briefly showed up in that documentary, “An Open Secret”, about child sex predators in Hollywood. Footage was of him as a teenager showing up to a predator’s house so who knows what might have happened to him back then as well.
Ah ok! I didn’t know that. And like you said, it’s not exactly an excuse for it, but it informs part of it. And this is not to shame anyone that listens to that pod or anything. There are far worse things out there and I’m complicit as anyone because I’ll still on occasion order something from Patti Lapel, Jensen’s bootleg hat/shirt company. It just always feels weird that they’re calling people out when the guy behind the boards never took accountability for his own actions. But still, they should call people out that abused them. Michael Jacobs seems like a real piece of shit.
I think there's some real fucked up shit that happened to most child stars in that era of ABC/Disney in the 90s that we will never hear about. With all the stuff that we have heard about, it's just got to be the tip of the iceberg. I ran into Lori Beth Denberg a while back and she had very nice things to say about her costars but did imply heavily that it was a fucking nightmare business.
