Not sure if the BAFTA situation has been discussed on the site . It’s really fucked up that Michael B Jordan and Delray Lindo had the n word shouted at them while presenting. It wasn’t edited out while a “Free Palestine” was. The guy was even mic’d the whole time, which he admitted didn’t make sense. He hasn’t even apologized yet. but also tourettes is really misunderstood and joked about. I’ve seen lots of ableist talk regarding this, belittling the disorder. People are totally valid to be offended and appalled though.
It should have been edited out and i blame the BAFTAs more than anything. He has apologized though. People are entitled to be offended by it but if you do, like, five seconds of research into the disease you can tell that it is involuntary and the outbursts often cause the person with tourettes large amounts of shame from it which only compounds their outbursts. i feel for MBJ and delroy, i also feel for that person as im sure they are having a rough time right now for something they cannot control. the Higher Learning podcast that Van Lathan does had a pretty good segment on it this week
It was like someone was in a lab somewhere trying to think of the absolute worst discourse possible. And then lo and behold it turns out the BBC was LITERALLY doing that.
They removed other things he said too apparently. They just wanted this to be a story off the poor man's back. BBC removed homophobic tic aimed at Alan Cumming, says Tourette's activist after BAFTAs backlash
I'm still baffled how many people talk up Sinners when Michael B Jordan came out and said he is proud of Majors resilience and would work with him again. Add that and Hailee Steinfeld taking pictures supporting the IDF
going into Sinners I was wary of that MBJ thing as well, but it's actually a really good movie and I hope it sweeps at the Oscars. I'm not one to separate the art from the artists, I absolutely abhor JKR and have distanced myself from everything HP. Buuut I still want Sinners to win all the awards. It's complicated. Jonathan Majors should totally fuck off tho
it is very, very, very, very easy to not condone or support MBJ's support of Majors or whatever Steinfeld is off supporting and still hope that the film does well at the awards for the literal hundreds of other people involved in it, not to mention the actors up for major awards and Coogler. Sinners is not just MBJ.
Hailee posting with IDF soldiers 7 years ago doesn't mean she's necessarily still a Zionist, not saying she isn't but nuance matters and we can't think of restorative justice with that mindset
Idk how old she is now but I cannot imagine she was much older than 20/21 seven years ago. I would imagine - or hope, perhaps foolishly - her views have changed. that being said awards don’t actually matter and framing it as hoping someone still wins something despite their views is odd
I mean, it doesn't help her case and the massive amounts of evidence of her husband being a racist piece of shit and both of them being MAGA
I’m open to learning that these people are shittier than I know. But, sometimes lines sure get blurred between accountability and Twitter-style bad faith callouts. (Not surprising to see that poster approach this in that way, tbh.) I didn’t know about Steinfeld’s Israel trip and IDF photos, though, and would love if there were evidence that she’s learned at least some of what’s up since then. At least I don’t know of any pro Israel stuff from her in the post October 7th reality, which does nothing to prove she’s outgrown Zionism but is enough for me to leave it as a question mark.
I would hope that if a movie by poc does well at the Oscars the ppl greenlighting projects will choose more projects by poc to greenlight. Aside from that... yeah, awards don't matter. If a category noms was only cishet white ppl idgaf who wins.
The studios only care about the Oscars insomuch as it drives revenue, and Sinners was already a box office success. That will lead to more opportunities for people of color, not the awards. Winning awards is also a burden historically. Sinners would become the film that "stole" the award from One Battle After Another.
I do not care about the Oscars at all, but Sinners winning awards may sway some general audiences that previously avoided it for one reason or another to seek out more black art (or black horror) and I don't know how that could be considered a bad thing
