Both Safdies are responsible. It does appear like it is Benny Safdie trying to get revenge on his brother during Oscar season, though.
I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s a tough needle to thread. The whole thing is vile. It appears Josh Safdie and the casting director cast Duress and then this 17-year-old, with her thinking she’s gonna work with Pattinson because she likes “Twilight” and then gets thrown in this nightmare scenario that gets cut from the movie. Then she gets groomed by this producer who goes on to groom other minors and the Safdies cut ties with him - that was all in the original report, which I think is why this didn’t fall back on the Safdies, since they seemingly did the right thing. Now, Tatiana Siegel, who wrote the original story in Variety, is going back to this because she’s a reporter for the new California Post, basically Rupert Murdoch’s west coast New York Post, and it feels like she’s been sitting on this to weaponize it for awards season. She’s also the reporter that weaponized the campaign against Rachel Zegler. I feel like this is a case of two things can be true - the Safdies situation and the assault that occurred on “Good Time” needs to be reported on and answered for and this is being done in less than good faith because Siegel is a tabloid reporter.
Regardless of who reported it, I do think it’s not that hard to thread the needle that what happened to that girl was deeply wrong and the directors bear responsibility. I do agree though it’s unfortunate that it has become a tabloid thing.
Yeah, the Safdies absolutely need to be held accountable for this. I don’t want to downplay that, but rather apply context to why we’re hearing this now rather than before. From the sounds of it from Stav’s podcast with Josh Safdie, his love of casting non-actors still has him losing control of his sets. He talked about how some of the “Marty Supreme” actors were caught with their phones on set or trying to get autographs. I feel like A24 has had a hands-off approach on the way he runs them because of his cache when they should be applying way more oversight after the victim’s allegations or should just not give him a platform at all.
I think it's like with Sean Baker where using non actors is an artistic decision, but they aren't not gonna not take advantage of exploiting labor laws
It is one of the downsides of that style of guerrilla filmmaking. Professional lines get blurred. A lot of people mock stuff like intimacy coordinators or a lot of the positions you see on sets but they are there to ensure safety and a healthy work environment.
Yeah, I think a lot of up and coming directors want their “I discovered Snoop from ‘The Wire’ off the streets” cred for having an eye for talent. There’s just no way that a million red flags shouldn’t have been thrown up in casting a man straight out of prison with no acting experience to have a sex scene with anyone, let alone a teenager. Like, obviously A24 was not involved with that because they only bought it, but still when the story came out originally, someone should have answered for it, outside of the producer being fired. The main thing I fear is that nothing happens because it’s a Murdoch rag and done by a reporter known to target celebrities, enough that they just can just brush it off as a hit piece and what are ya gonna do?
Odessa A'zion Shares She's Pulling Out of Sean Durkin’s ‘Deep Cuts’ After Whitewashing Accusations: 'I'm Out' : r/blankies i'm not familiar with any of what's going on but based on what i've read here it seems a little overblown and contrived from internet weirdos?
im sure like most thing that that is true but i also don't buy the "ohhhh i didn't read the book i had no clue about this character" like okay did you not read the script you were sent did you not read the character breakdowns? i realize she thought she was going to be doing one role and then was chosen for another but either a) she is spinning it to try to minimize the backlash or b) she is just selecting parts blindly and neither option there is good
As true as that is, I do feel like most people would just move forward with the role. So even if she's blowing smoke, good on her for dropping the gig. That's a big call.
it feels insanely gen Z tbh, like i know she comes from a celeb family but it reads like someone who doesn't quite understand the ramifications of their actions due to age. not trying to explain anything away, just giving my two cents on the tone of the response. in general she seems kind of sloppy with the way she presents herself online, i wouldn't be surprised to see more of these types of moments.
Jacob Elordi is about to play a non-white character in what will likely be the worst literary adaptation of all time. I lay more culpability at directors/producers than actors in these situations though. They are the ones who are making the active decision to whitewash roles.
I think we all know this isn’t the first time it’s happened and casting directors and directors themselves share in the blame, just think her response came off as performative
Odessa sounds just like, kind of dumb. I think that’s the most realistic and charitable explanation, she just wasn’t paying attention and bailed after a backlash she didn’t see coming, because she didn’t understand the source material.
He’s taking the opposite approach to all the major franchises and studios. A Nathan post is an event.
tbf she probably didn't read the book before reading the script, I don't think anyone in human history has done that besides Reese lol
