The way Howard Stern’s career is ending with nobody giving a shit after being king of all boomer media for decades is pretty funny. Scumbag still thought satellite radio was more influential than podcasts in the 2020s.

edit: I originally posted a video of his but thought better of it after

He has certainly quite the career. I didnt know he was retiring, but he must be of age now.

Plus. so many podcasts out there now....

I never understood the economics of his satellite radio deal. I know how popular he was on terrestrial radio but I never met anyone who paid for satellite radio.

I used to sell satellite radios at Best Buy. I never understood it.

The only person I know that has XM gets it for free through his dealership. Never heard of anyone paying for it.

I have it and pay for it. about $6/mth promo rate.

  8. I’m pretty sure my mom pays for it, and I definitely have had coworkers who listened to it though I’m unsure if they were paying or not

  9. What was his last contract? $500 million? Someone was paying something.

I remember it being a big new technology but it just seemed weird that an already dying medium would add a subscription cost when it used to be free.

It was pre-streaming and there were a lot more niche genre stations than just top 40/rock/oldies. I remember thinking it was sick that there was a station that would play metalcore.

  13. I never had it but I imagine if none of your local stations played what you liked satellite would be a good alternative
It just got replaced by streaming way too quickly I guess

...Why are we talking about this here? This thread gets derailed every week lolol

My parents have it because a year subscription came with the new car they bought. Idk if they actually use it or how common that is to be included but I’m sure their sales teams include those in their metrics to boost the numbers

My stepdad got SiriusXM just to listen to Howard Stern, so at least one dude named Gary pays for satellite radio

I saw a couple different places say that. It definitely inflates numbers.

It's definitely in a lot of new cars as a trial. I cosigned a car for my sister and the satellite radio people called me like 10 times to try to get me to pay for it once the trial was up and it was super obnoxious. But I definitely remember a time before streaming and probably before I had an iPod where I wished I had it because I grew up in the middle of nowhere with only like country and classic rock radio stations.
