What an ass. Also to call the cop a nazi and and an antisemitic slur was an odd choice.

Real weird that Sinners/Michael B Jordan is getting so much praise even though he just openly supported a woman beater

  9. Right?? It's weird bc I really wanna see it but his comments have been such a turn off. I'm gonna have that in the back of my head regardless of how good the movie is

I just think it's crazy that so many people were up in arms about podcasters having Majors on and Jordan supporting him as well and then as soon as there's a "fantastic" (quotes because I haven't seen it) movie with Jordan where they can thirst over him they all just forgive him or just forget completely.

It’s disappointing but par for the course. Some of the more popular people just get passes. Brad Pitt for some reason never got an ounce of criticism despite abusing his wife and children. A lot of people’s favorites openly support Woody Allen. Tom Cruise is one of the leaders of an organization that commits some horrific abuses but people will flock to see mission impossible 27.

Totally understand that sentiment as I appreciated his performance but couldn’t stop thinking about it as well. Films are, personally, different for me as there are so many other people and factors involved; the director, rest of the cast that are women/other POCs, and the crew. I also think the story and craft are very important, especially for these times. It’s tricky.

  13. yeah it's really situational and hard to quantify. i put up with it watching Loki S2 but I gave away my bluray of Lovecraft Country and--for a whole other reason--didn't even bother finishing it

I think part of it is how prominent that actor is in the art itself and how the audience judges the film. For instance, Loki season 2 included Majors (which sucks and I don't support), but it was lead by Hiddleston and introduced Ke Huy Quan. And people aren't going out of their way to praise Majors performance in it nor are they ignoring what he's done. Jordan however is the starring role in Sinners and is highly involved with the project and it basically just showcases him as one of today's big name actors. People are raving about his performance and completely dismissing anything he's done. Granted, I don't think supporting an abuser is as bad as actually being an abuser, but it's still shitty. If there was more general discussion along the lines of "While I appreciate Jordan's skilled portayal in this movie, I can't shake the fact that it's highly ironic for him to be in a movie called Sinners given he just supported an abuser" then maybe I would think differently. And maybe that conversation is happening more that I think it is and I just don't see it. That's always a possibility.

The truth at the end of the day is that bad people will do good things and good people will do bad things and it's impossible to completely separate the art from the artist. You don't know everyone's lives and you don't know everyone's history, but you can just try to be better each day and give platforms to the people you believe to be good at heart and best for the world moving forward.

I don't know how much his quote circulated. I'd guess a ton of people, regardless of if they'd care or not, don't even know it happened

Yeah, it’s something I wrestle with a lot of artists/creators that work with or praise abusers.

We all draw our own lines. I don’t condone what Jordan said at all; nor will I ever pay for a movie with Majors in it. But also, Jordan didn’t do the abusing and Majors has nothing to do with this movie, on top of this also being a rare original major studio movie with a cast of mostly POC actors that, as far as I know, have not praised Majors and deserve to have their talents supported. And I’d be lying if I said Jordan is not very impressive in it.

That said, anyone that thinks what Jordan said was too far and won’t support his work is totally valid.

Especially in movies, drawing your own line is the only way you can really do it and even that’s tough. Plan B Productions, which Pitt has a stake in, produces and has produced some of the best, most diverse indie movies out there. People can take comfort in Pitt saying he hasn’t seen a dime come back from those movies (as of an interview he did in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”). But still, Pitt has a hand in it, if someone is trying to avoid to supporting him.

The other thing is that it's completely unavoidable realistically and are you going to deny yourself new ideas, new art, new futures because of what one person does when it comes to a piece of collective art like a television show or a movie?

A lot of the times I take it as a case by case basis. I'm not supporting anything Rowling related because I know what she does with her money and what she stands for. But there's so many levels to assholeness. Am I going to avoid watching something for dumb fun like Big Daddy because it's got a douchebag like Rob Schneider in it? No because I doubt I'm realistically putting a lot of money into his pocket when it randomly shows up on TBS at my parent's house.

I'm just trying not to be active in supporting horrible people and ideals.

For me- my line is the “brains” of the project. If the director/lead writer is a bad person I avoid it but I can handle a bad actor in a cast of many

This conversation may sound trivial to some, but I absolutely find the value here. It’s so much easier to draw the line with bands or musical artists, but I struggle with tv/film due to the amount of stakeholders involved. Like, I’ve gone through the mental gymnastics of, “oh, should I support this because “x” is in it?.. but wait.. this “y” writer is attached and they deserve a voice.” All part of the learning curve, I guess. Again, sounds trivial, but I rather look at it through this lens than one of pure, intentional ignorance.
