During the Super Bowl my mom asked me “are they booing Taylor Swift because she’s friends with Blake Lively and the whole Justin Baldoni situation?” yes mom, the men at the game are super invested in that
Some people thought they made the allusion to the Blake Lively/Justin Baldoni thing without telling her. People apparently forgot she is also an actor and that her reaction was probably fake.
These are the ones that I find to be increasingly difficult to navigate. Personally, I have no idea how to judge the magnitude anymore. Admittedly, as a cisgender male, Ive never been uncomfortable or offended by these types of gestures. That, in and of itself, could be considered toxic. All this is to say that I appreciate the feedback in this thread.
I really hate that this current moment is making celebrities I liked feel comfortable coming out as dipshits. Really disappointing to hear Woody is a RFK Stan "Fauci is evil" guy.
Exposing celebrities for either being empty platitudes or straight up dipshits has been one of the good things to come out of this imo. We have needed to stop idolizing them long ago. Jane Fonda is a real one though. She stood up for things then they made her hated but it was 100% right.
i refuse to watch that film, but from what i've read, it leans pretty heavily into transphobic stereotypes, not to mention irl the trans actress is a piece of shit. so imagine this shitty person in this shitty film being someone's first exposure to trans people, in a climate where anti-trans rhetoric is already alarmingly high. i wish i could say i was championing a fellow trans woman at the Oscars, but here we are.
Between this and the Chappell Roan column after the Grammy’s, maybe THR should stop letting people post guest columns. Gascón’s tweets are indefensible.
look there are no other trans actresses like Hunter Schafer, Patti Harrison, Hari Nef, Tommy Dorfman, Alexandra Billings, Laverne Cox, Jamie Clayton, MJ Rodriguez, Vera Drew, I think I made my point lol
and like, we already know Oscar voters aren't actually watching every movie. and i'm sure they aren't chronically online like we are. so there's bound to be well-meaning, relatively progressive people who misguidedly vote for the trans film in their category (or BP) because it seems like the right thing to do in response to anti-trans legislation. but unbeknownst to them it's, as i've said, a shitty person in a shitty film.
Toni Collette would've gotten a win for Hereditary if it was up to me. Those fucks didn't even nominate her.
The Oscars rarely acknowledge the horror genre, even if the performances are outstanding (I agree with your Toni sentiment).
