wild also every time a guy like Dr. Disrespect(?) gets in trouble I'm reminded of how out of touch I am with streamer/Twitch culture. I have no idea who that guy is lol which is not to say he isn't huge, it's just a big blind spot for me
Dude is a father?? Lol at "I'm not going anywhere, I'm just taking an extended vacation with my family"
"Spending time with my family" is the go-to PR excuse for someone laying low after allegations become public
For a convention whose guests are mainly children’s cartoon voice actors, this is certainly a choice: And the Instagram post announcing him is obviously set to “limited comments.”
For anyone unaware (I know this was brought up before when he hosted SNL but just in case anyone missed that), Woody Harrelson spreading anti-vax beliefs in new video:
If you’re on an iPhone, you can pull up the article and then go to reader view and you can read the whole article
The transphobic allegation refers to a text by him stating "Elliot wants to come out as trans on the show. As Ivan. Oh my f**king God. Kill me now." While that looks bad out of context it's not necessarily transphobic. It's added work for him and have to do rewrites last minute before production. (Which was already heavily impacted by COVID). He could've also been worried about the public perception to the show doing that, it was very uncharted territory. (Yes you shouldn't try to appeal to bigots but even not knowing how the general public would appeal is a huge thing) He didn't dead name Elliot or the character in the text and didn't misgender him either. Elliot has stated he would've been fine playing the character as is if required or done the bare minimum & not have hired a consultant for that rewrite. He also rehired this consultant for S4 and is heavily credited for a couple of the episodes. Odds are Steve would have just left them alone if he was actually transphobic. He didn't minimize Viktor's plot in the season or try to kill him off so he didn't hold a grudge over the changes Nuance is important and a single out of context text blowing off steam doesn't really prove he is (or indeed isn't) transphobic (I'm trans before any comes for me) (now the other stuff? that's another topic. not defending him on that or indeed this, just offering perspective)
This seems like a lot of work for someone to put in to defend an almost certainly problematic showrunner
Feels like he could've just not been a dickhead about it? It's not that hard. We don't have to try to defend him.
If your reaction to writing a TRANS ACTOR’S character in a show as trans, especially at their request/time of coming out/in this day and age, is “it’s more work for me/public perception,” fuck all the way off.
I don't think anyone's denying the stressful workload that change must've constituted but I think there's a much better way to say it. "We're accommodating Elliot Page and changing course for the character, this is gonna be down to the wire but it's worth it" or something to that extent. These dudes just never stop to consider anyone other than themselves. Or in a world where this dude really was just talking about workload (which is, to be clear, not the world I think we are in) never looked at what he wrote and thought "gee, that sure doesn't sound good"
Unfortunately not too surprised, the castmates didn't seem as chummy with him than each other when I've watched some interviews
