I’m not sure what point you’d draw as even the earliest military enlisters murdered native people and colonized their lands. Even the US involvement in WWII is tainted by the fact that we got in the war late and committed terrible atrocities that are overshadowed only by how evil the nazis are. But Dresden and the atomic bombs are horrific and evil in their own right.
That also makes it a more complex issue in regard to accountability. There are many factors why one might support even one veteran (relative, friens, etc.) who went into it out of despair. Unless we know every facet of the relationship one has with a veteran or current soldier, it's really hard to make a pure judgement call.
I think we we were saying the jingoism is gross and the demand that we thank our veterans is unwarranted and the whole day perpetuates this agenda. I even noted that it’s the governments fault more than the soldiers and certainly not the fault of those drafted. So I’m not sure what other judgment call you think I was making
It depends what you mean by "supporting" a veteran. My cousin joined the Marine infantry at the height of the war in Iraq because he had an abusive stepfather and didn't have the money for college. I "support" him in that I feel terrible that a variety of things led to that decision, but I don't want to put him on a parade float either. Similarly I wouldn't celebrate someone experiencing poverty but I would like to create a society where they don't have to go through that.
Very important to make sure it's not propaganda-riddled sources and I'm sure many accounts will point out atrocities on the side of the US - Ken Burns' documentaries are a pretty good source which really examines it when it comes to back WW2 and Vietnam. I highly recommend them if anyone here is somewhat interested in an in-depth look into various sides of the wars.
Yeah his Vietnam documentary is great. I was shocked at how divided the country was I thought the war was way more unpopular. He showed a poll that said 51% of people thought the Kent state shooting was justified! I always point to that when people talk about how divided we are now, we have seen insane division before.
By "support" I don't have a definite way to define it, which is why I said it's complex. I wouldn't make a Veterans Day post about a friend or relative and wouldn't make a D-Day post for an ancestor, but could I really make a fair judgment call on someone who does given their emotional concern for someone involved? I don't think I could, which is why I think it's complex and hard to address when it comes to accountability issues.
His 'The War' documentary goes into some of the camps that Japanese-Americans were placed in and how kids were taken from their parents, who were forced to go to Japan. A few interviewees give their account and it's scary.
My work announced I'll get Veterans Day and Juneteenth off starting in 2024, I'll take it It was kinda a bad look that they gave us Juneteenth during the year of George Floyd and then promptly took it back from us
If it about Pratt, it does sometimes feel like people are assigning more malice to him than that which is really there. He seems like just a general dumb guy who just sort of goes along with the kind of stuff you hear in mainstream venues.
I have a grudge against Chris and Anna for that ordeal with their dog. Or Anna's dog. I forget which. She signed a contract not to rehome the dog without notifying the shelter but did it anyway and it was found homeless and starving poor lil bb. And then when they gave away their cat. I'm not looking for accountability for them tho I just don't feel like they should be allowed to adopt animals maybe
I've had my cat for 10 years and before that my parents gave away every pet we ever owned within like 3 years. And there were a lot.
Every now and then I would flip through the channels and TMZ was on so I would watch it, and didn't really see anything wrong at the time. it's cool to see celebs having normal lives, but the way paparazzi just ambushes people is so intrusive, and the people in that office talk about celebs like they aren't human beings, it's really offputting.
I try to explain to my lil sister how brutal tabloids used to be like peak Britney but it's hard to even explain. Underskirt pictures of miley cyrus as a minor, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen turning 18 countdown clocks, the way Amy Winehouse was treated... like imagine going to the beach and this is your life
