At the height of his popularity, Stewart held his Rally to Restore Sanity. During his speech, he blamed extremism on "both sides" for ruining America. This was right before the 2010 midterms, where Republicans were co-opting the extremism of the Tea Party and were accusing Democrats of killing old people. The Democrats' extremism was a watered-down health care bill that mirrored the Romney plan in Massachusetts. He always loved playing both sides.
I think there's a bit of correlation between certain fans of those shows and the "it's just a joke" crowd, but you're right, that has less to do with the creators themselves. I'm just wary of people like that because I had acquaintances in college who thought that way, except they were more fans of anime and video games. Every fandom has its bad apples I guess
Comedy bros have the biggest persecution complex. Imagine not knowing the difference between consequences and censorship.
It doesn't sound like Seinfeld is giving him permission to be shitty. He's saying that there needs to be a conversation with Chapelle and comedians at large about the subject. He just refused to have that conversation played between media outlets. Whether Seinfeld talks to Chapelle or not on his own remains to be seen, but I'd say what he says here is far from giving Chapelle a free pass to spew ignorant shit.
By saying it was well executed but deserves some conversation in some future unspecified time he is kind of giving him a pass.
Not comparing what they each have done, but as far as apologies go, hasn't Will Smith talked more about it than Letitia? All That I've seen her do is tweet a quick "that's not my views" and then delete her account and refuse to talk about it since. Will has at least addressed it head on after the fact (even if it did seem extremely fabricated). Also, I'm really tired of celebrities tweeting out videos and books, and then claiming that the videos don't represent them completely.
When was JK canceled? Last I knew she was still publishing new books and having HBO shows made off her works. Also who cares what Helena Bonham Carter thinks on it? Like obviously the person who is still good friends with an abuser thinks the abuser isn't one.
For sure, but she sure isn't canceled. She's still getting publishing deals and having more movies made. She's not canceled at all, just rightfully getting called on her absolute shit takes. They all complain about cancel culture, but hardly ever actually face any sort of 'cancelation' or reprocessing for their actions.
